Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…

My impression of Dr. Brown is that he wants better for himself and fellow African American people. Dr. Brown is on a tour speaking to negro in churches of a run down community. This tells me that Dr. Brown is courageous and trying to inspire his peers to take action. Also, Dr. Brown is very confident in himself because he considers himself to be “A man of some prestige”. Lastly, Dr. Brown appears to be a very strong protagonist of education because he works very hard to be educated and he eventually becomes a Professor.…

People do not realize someone is in need of help or in danger until it is too late. The person might be severely hurt or injured. When faced with an emergency situation, knowing what to do greatly increase the likelihood that a person will take action. While you absolutely cannot be prepared for every possible event that might transpire, taking first aid classes and receiving CPR training could help you feel more competent and prepared to deal with potential emergencies. When faced with an emergency situation, knowing what to do greatly increase the possibility that a person will take action. People are also more likely to help others if they think that the person truly deserves it. In one classic study, participants were more likely to give money to a stranger if they believed that the individual's wallet had been stolen rather than that the person had simply spent all his money. This might explain why some people are more willing to give money to the homeless while others are not. Those who believe that homeless people are in their situation due to laziness or unwillingness to work are less likely to give money, while those who believe that these individuals are genuinely deserving of help are more likely to provide help (“How to Overcome the Bystander Effect”).…

There are many situations where you are told to help yourself and then help others around you. One time you hear this is when you are on an airplane. You will hear the flight attendant say “Please put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others.” Vincent Nguyen explains this by stating, “The idea is that if you’re trying to put on an oxygen mask for someone else, you may lose consciousness and you’ll be unable to assist others (or yourself) later. However, if you fit yourself with a mask first you’d be able to remain conscious and aid people as needed.” This rationally explains why you should think to save yourself before you start to try and help other people. Another situation where you would have to save yourself before you save others is if you are on a sinking boat. Tess Christmas says, “Your will alone is not going to keep them from sinking, no matter how long you tread. All you’re going to achieve is the weight of the both of you pulling you underwater, and then there are two drowned people instead of one.” This explains how it would do more good for you to just save yourself than to try and save another person and yourself. These show how survival should be the primary goal in real life…

This happens to be one of the most valuable life lessons, i.e. Take care of yourself first, before you try to help others. William Shakespeare said, "To thine own self be true." Your greatest responsibility is towards yourself first. Once that is taken care of, you can start caring for others. As it's said ‘If you want to lift somebody up, you have be on higher ground first'. Many people may think that this viewpoint is of self-interest and narcissistic. They think that they have to sacrifice themselves for others. If that would have been true then why do you think Jesus Christ say, "Love your neighbor as you love yourself". Underline the word ‘as'. If you don't love yourself, you just cannot love others.…
