Designer Babies Pros And Cons
Thanks to the increasing knowledge of medical technology, genetically superior superhumans are closer than ever. The exciting and terrifying stories of science fiction could soon come to life, but an ethical debate has arisen. The term designer baby refers to a baby created with a process called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). This genetically screens embryos created with in vitro fertilization for characteristics like sex, hair color, and disability. The future of this technology however, is aiming for parents to be able to choose traits like superior intelligence and athleticism for their child. Embryos that are screened and have the traits the parents want can be implanted into the mother for her to carry to term. Experts …show more content…

They argue that the screening prevents disability, and it is in the child's best interest to prevent them from having a disorder or disability. While babies selected by PGD are less likely to have a disability, this is because they were selected because they did not have a disability. Another embryo with a disability existed, it just was not chosen to be implanted. Proponents of PGD could also claim a parent forms their child by the environment they put them in, so PGD is no different. PGD is different from environment as a child. That person may be able to change their environment, but can never overcome their genetics. Others might assert that parents who do not feel able to care for a child with a disability should use PGD. If parents have enough money to use a costly procedure like PGD, they most likely also have enough money to care for a child with a disability. Having a disabled child is not a curse, and the possibility of having a disabled child is a component of having a baby. If someone chooses to have a baby, they could have any sort of disability, personality, or intelligence. Designer babies should not be allowed because parents would be able to choose against disabilities, the division between the poor and the rich, the lessening of the human gene pool, and the arguments presented in Jekyll and Hyde. They would allow the rich to become

The author also makes it clear there are many people for designer babies; they see the positives to the “mad science”. Many families will use this after having one child with a disease and they want to be sure their next child doesn’t suffer from the same thing. People who carry genes that may cause life threatening childhood illness should be able to have healthy children if science can assist them, said an anonymous scientist. Tuhus-…

James Gallagher, a health editor for BBC News which is ranked as one of the most objective and credible U.S news sources, constructed an article called “Designer babies' debate should start, scientists say” (January 15, 2015). Within this source, Gallagher claims that leading scientists have told BBC that based on the current progress in the understanding of genetics, society needs to be prepared to come to terms with the ethics that surround the concept. In order to provide foundation for his argument, Gallagher brings up questionably unethical scenarios relating to designer babies, and adds what some scientists that work closely with genetics have to say about the topic. For instance, Gallagher added the opinion of Dr. Tony Perry, a professor…

Scientists are developing ways to edit the DNA of tomorrow’s children. In the short story “Flowers for Algernon”, by Daniel Keyes, there is an intellectually disabled man named Charlie Gordon that is also going to operated on to promote his intelligence. As informed scientists are developing ways to edit the DNA of babies. That means that people are making their babies with requested traits: intelligence, eye color, athleticism, and disease prevention. They are known as designer babies. The term "designer baby" is an informal name given to a baby whose genetic makeup has been altered by means of genetic engineering. This term was originally derived from 'designer clothing ', implying that the baby has been pieced together with desired 'traits ' or characteristics according to the direction of those that hold with them the power to change a baby before it is born. This may be the parents, scientists or doctors. Currently, it is a technology in its early stages, used to screen embryos and select those with desirable traits for implantation into a mother. However, as it slowly advances and possibilities begin to reveal themselves, parties for and against have rallied about the moral rights…

My thoughts on designer babies is that it is a wonderful thing to research, but now it's crossing the line. It's amazing how we can take DNA and change it to what we like it to become, but this is someone’s life you are changing. Not only this, but this is now a rather large debate going on about this. Whether or not this practice is palatable or not. It's important to research and make amazing discoveries, but putting someone's life on the line shouldn't be something to put under the…

Without the factor of designer babies, there is already competition between who runs faster and who can play better. Although that is the reason for extra-curricular activities, the rise in competition will be an extreme amount if designer babies are thrown into the picture. The fear of having “a race of super humans” (Baird 16) will not only create competition, it will also create a more defined level of social classes because the “genetically enhanced children [will have] an advantage over the children born with the ‘luck of the draw’ genes” (Designer Babies). Another concern that some people have is that messing with the genetics of a human could damage the gene pool and have long term consequences that doctors and scientists have not yet discovered (Baird 16). Similarly, some people wonder that if this procedure was safe then why are animals dying after being genetically engineered. Even if scientists can prefect this process through animals, are multiple humans going to have to die in order for scientists to be able to do this procedure safely and efficiently? Most of these people think it is a stupid risk to jeopardize human lives in order to create “super humans” (Baird…

I do not support this side because you shouldn’t modify your babies to make them how you would like them, you should accept them the way they are. Tanya Lewis, who is a specialist in biology and staff writer at Live Science, said that “germline editing that leads to the creation of designer babies, is not required to live normally ” (Lewis). She also made a good point about DNA modification that says “DNA that has been carefully selected to enhance their appearance, intelligence, or other traits that are not medically necessary” (Lewis). Another reason that people are against “designer babies” is because they think that people will try to improve races in humans. I agree with all of the people who are going against designing babies because they make very solid points and all of the points make sense.…

Imagine, deciding to have a baby but instead of going to the hospital going somewhere similar to subway to “have it your way.” Designer babies give humans the ability to choose wanted characteristics for a child. Although the technology for this project is still in its first steps, today it is a possibility. Designer babies seem like a fabulous idea but it should not be worth overpopulating the world, using babies as science experiments, and only allowing the rich to create a perfect baby.…

There are many ways in which Designer Babies can benefit the baby and it's future. All the studies and all the benefits support the claim that Designer Babies is a good thing. This matters because of how this idea could impact the future of all humans, just a few examples could be: humans would all be smarter, healthier, and live longer. The only way this can be achieved is if people realize how much Designer Babies can really benefit mankind. People must realize all of the benefits that come with Designer Babies, notice how this could actually save lives, and benefit the human race for the future and years to…

To start off, considering a family does choose to genetically modify and separate a child from the true family line of genes can have really bad risks. The procedure in which designer babies are made outside the mother's stomach like stated before the main questions for this is "Is the baby getting enough food and nutrients?" Although, that is not the only risk. Just putting the genes inside is a risk...The embryo inside can pop causing the baby to die. On the other hand this can be justified, all birth can lead to a miscarriage natural or not. Having a designer baby or natural baby, both children will get the same kind of care to make it out safely.…

Consumer driven eugenics practices like designer babies, provide parents with choices, something that the old eugenics never did. However, these choices may inhibit conditions for choice in the future. Screening embryos for diseases and creating children “In our own image” (Galton, David (2001)) can help parents give their children the best quality of life possible. Yet, in the future these techniques could put pressure on parents to create increasingly perfect children and enhance them above the normal species functioning. This may result in parents who choose to continue a pregnancy…

Designer babies, a term used by journalists, are described as "advanced reproductive technologies allowing parents and doctors to screen embryos for genetic disorders and for selecting healthy embryos" (Bionet). There are three ways that can be used to create this "designer baby". "The simplest way to a designer child is human cloning: taking a cell from an adult and combining it with a human egg to make an identikit clone of the adult. This is the ultimate pedigree child with guaranteed genes […] Another more difficult way to make designer people, or a super race, is to take sperm or eggs, or cells in a developing embryo, and add new genes to them. This is called germ cell alteration […] A third way is to alter cells after birth. This is called somatic cell alteration. Here the effects will die out when…

I think families should be able to have "designer babies" where the genes of the baby are chosen. There are four main reasons. First, this is a very interesting technology. We should try it, since people can choose what their babies to be like. Secondly, this is a big step of improving in the science area. There is no such thing before. We should let the families try this and see how it goes. If it works, we can put this technology on then other animals. It might help us to get earn more money by making the animal bigger or stronger, since people eat meat and use animals to work for them. Also, it can help people to save the money of paying the vets by not letting the animals get sick. Third, it can help the babies to have a happy and healthy lives. A happy and healthy life is very important to everyone. Although it might fail, we still can improve the technology by trying a lot of times to make it perfect. However, we should test a lot of time on animals, like rats, before let the families to have the "designer baby." For the specific traits, I think they should let them families to choose the things related to the body structure; like not having any disease and cancer, stronger, having good skin, etc. On the other hand, I think they should not choose the appearances, personalities and talents of their babies. Everyone should be special and unique. Also, I think inheritance are better and the other genes. It is because they are gifts from our parents, and children are supposed to be like their…
