Descriptive Essay: My Growing Up In Chicago
When I was a kid, growing up in the North Side of Chicago and being picked on by bullies, I prayed for superpowers. Like Superman, I wanted to be able to fly faster than speeding bullets, to be more powerful than locomotives, to leap tall buildings at a single bound. Mainly, I wanted to punch bullies in the stomach so hard that my fist came out of their backs. Winters in Chicago are so cold that frost forms leafy patterns on your bedroom window and stays there for months. The wind howls off Lake Michigan, and a thick shell of pitted black ice covers the streets and sidewalks from December to April. To keep warm in winter, I wore a heavy wool coat, a wool muffler, wool mittens, furry earmuffs and –one of my most treasured possessions—a

I focus on Mr. Lambert who is dutifully going through the instructions. I feel sorry for him sometimes; a life of teenagers and Maths must really take its toll. He mentions the time limit and the structure of the exam, but I don’t really listen. I’m too busy staring off at a distant jet, flying high, glimmering in the summer sun. Mr. Lambert finishes and hands out the test paper. He reaffirms to everyone (first time for me) that we have 5 minutes reading time before a 2 hour test period. I know that these will be the last 2 hours of my innocent life and I know that it is already over.…

I’m the kind of guy who doesn’t like to sit in traffic; I’m the kind of guy that could sit in the cockpit of a plane and go high speed where falling isn’t an option because once you fall you can’t get up. As I a child all of could think of was being successful because growing up living in east Harlem you saw the people that weren’t going anywhere in life and you see where that got them in life. Growing up I have saw people not finish school and people who were in school for a very long time to get one degree. Many people in my family have either not graduated or still in college my aunt for example took her about six years to finish a two year degree because she constantly messed up and stop going to school and when back and procrastinated…

Growing up in a very horrid environment can often be too influential to the point where it drives much of the youth, like myself, to ignore their dreams. However, I am an exception of this situation. I have primarily grown up in the urban area of Detroit, Michigan with many negative influences surrounding myself and others. Constant violence and crimes being committed was becoming normal for the east side of Detroit, in which I was living. It is clear to see that no child would be able to have a positive, effective future being near all of that commotion. Fortunately, my family and I were able to escape those particular troubles and move to a place where the community was more welcoming and beneficial. Aside from the general living conditions,…

It’s Saturday when I wake, and I am back in 1963. In the morning, my mom tells me she heard that Jackie Robinson is going to be in Chicago today. Our neighbor, who is cousins with Jackie Robinson, had told her the night before and was waiting to surprise me in the morning. She said that if I would do some chores, she would take me from our house in Gary to Chicago to try to see Jackie Robinson.…

So I offically have the, “ IM GOING TO DIE ALONE IN MY TINY ONE BEDROOM APARTMENT AT 32” blues. I've been in Las Vegas for about 4 months now and I think I'm suppose to have everything accoplished by now. Plenty of friends, a few different streams of income, going back to school. Living the life of a single woman in Sin City but NO! Most of my days consist of smoking weed, watching TV, working and finding other ways to create more income. After a few months of the same routine of absolutly nothing I think any sane person would eventually turn to drinking and/or smoking 1/8th of weed every few days. Shit, I did! So after a phone call and a 20 min wait, I rolled up and took a few hits of the Ahfgan Kush I realize that I'm being…

hometown of Lawndale, California is a quaint little city. Diverse in ethnicity and quite peaceful. Growing up I liked to take walks in the fresh summer breeze. Hard to believe it was more then 20 years ago. Accomponied by my grandmother, its one of my most fond memories. After our stroll we would grab a bite to eat at the local burger joint which was called Brolly Hut. Boy what a burger that was! A thick juicy bun crunchy lettuce and thick slices of tomatoes with the shredded lettuce which I enjoyed more then the slice other restaurant's would just throw…

I have lived in San Antonio, TX my entire life and most of it on the city’s Eastside. The Eastside has a reputation of being a rougher part of the city. I believe it’s unfair because I mostly see people working hard and giving back to the community. Although crime is frequently reported on the news and occasionally hearing gunshots, I feel safe. That security has to do with my family. While we may not live in an expensive home or drive luxury cars, we are rich in love and support.…

Last year was my first year in Ohio, so it was kind of hard at first. Since I was new, I didn’t know anyone. The first couple of days were kind of hard, but as I started making friends it soon got easier. My favorite reason to come to school was to see my friends. I hated waking up every day at 6 A.M. to come to school. My favorite class was math because I love math and Mr. Cowan made it a fun year. The class I struggled in was science. I might've still got good grades in science, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t stress me out and got me nervous. Some of the hardships I experienced was stressing over school work too much and people judging me for who I am and how I do things. One of the accomplishments I made was getting a GPA of over 4.0, which…

I will not exaggerate and say that growing up in America is a great experience and that it allows me to see Islam alone, as opposed to an Islam riddled with cultural influence. Nor will I exaggerate and say that growing up in America is a horrible experience, that I am surrounded by the influence of evil daily, and that I abhor living in "Egypt both statements are valid to a certain extent, and the point at which they compromise is the truth.…

As I looked into my boyfriends eyes out in 30 degree weather, in a city we have never been to, I realized how lucky I was to be celebrating my birthday in this one of a kind place, New York City. Two eighteen-year-old kids exploring this wonderful and large city all by ourselves. What could possibly go wrong? The subway got closed down unexpectedly when we needed to get back to our hotel room in order to make it on time to the untold musical story of the Wizard of OZ, “Wicked” so, we decided to just walk from Chinatown to Manhattan (where the hotel we were staying at was). Although it was a long and tiring walk, we enjoyed ourselves with all the blankets of snow covering the streets. It was our first time seeing snow. After we got back,…

All my life, all I ever knew was Indiana. My friends, school, and favorite restaurant were all there. I didn’t want to change anything! I was 8; I thought I had my whole life together. That soon changed when my mother was offered a new job in a new state. A state... that to me was like a whole other country, a place full of new, strange and scary things.I didn’t want to leave the Krogers with a ginormous wall full of delicious jelly beans, or the Bonnie & Clyde restaurant my dad always took me to before half day kindergarten. But, I was small, no one cared about my opinions. Next thing I knew, we were gone. Goodbye Indiana! Hello corn filled Iowa……
