The theme of oppression is examined when comparing the literary devices in the poem "As I Grew Older" by Langston Hughes and the story "The Loophole Of Retreat" by Harriet A. Jacobs. It is through the use of personification and symbolism that the theme is reflected. The oppression is in just use of authority or power.

In the poem "As I Grew Older" by Langston Hughes describes about a black girl that had a dream, but this dream was slowly disappearing from her. She didn't have enough freedom and she always wants it to through. The author in the poem is hiding from oppression by hiding in the attic. Also Hughes uses some literary devices such as symbolism and personification. By saying the words the "wall rose" Langston Hughes showing personification because the wall can't grow. Then in the second paragraph the "wall" is represent symbolism. It is symbolizes her dream with a wall because this wall is blocking her happiness and future.

In the story "Loophole Of Retreat" by Harriet A. Jacobs shows the oppression as darkness. He lived in the small garret that he called it as "den". It was very dark didn't have enough air in it and was not for a cold weather. A. Jacobs uses some conflict in the story by saying the words "I suffered for air even more than for light. It shows us that he wanted to have more freedom and not to depend on anybody.

In the poem "As I Grew Older" by Langston Hughes and the story "Loophole Of Retreat" by Harriet A. Jacobs use the same theme and the both have oppression. The authors both deal with oppression by breaking through it. Also the both poem and the story have the same ideas and feelings about their

    Many slaves longed to be free. Where as some weren’t able to cultivate that freedom. The story of Harriet Ann Jacobs differs greatly. A slave born in Edenton, North Carolina in 1831, Jacobs had the determination to do so even in the most troublesome situation. After losing her parents, after the death of her brother Jacob, Harriet and her youngest brother John were raised by their maternal grandmother. Unlike most slaves, Harriet learned to read, write, and under her mistress. Harriet hoped of being freed by her mistress until she passed and Harriet was willed to Dr. Flint. As long as she was a servant in his house, she was sexually harassed and physically abused. Fearing that he would actually rape, Jacobs began an affair with a prominent white lawyer, and bared him two children. However, these children weren’t allowed to belong to her, because she was enslaved. Shortly afterwards, Jacobs hid herself in the crawlspace of her grandmother’s house from 1835-1845. She watched her children play from a hole in the roof, while waiting for the perfect time to escape North. In 1842, she went to New York city by boat and was able to unite with her children.     Before the Civil War, America was plagued with a complicated social quandary that incorporated individual, societal, political, economic, and religious principles. Its authorship includes Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe who dually challenges the legitimacy of slavery in their literature. While both Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” and Frederick Douglas’s “Narrative of the Life of an American Slave,” offer impelling accounts, regarding the historical slavery era throughout the 1800s, the two authors write from distinctive experiences. Stowe’s Uncle Tom, a fictional character, attracts his audience through his profound Christian faith, which gives him an unbreakable spirit that enables him to see both the hand of God in all that happens and, in the critical moment, to stand up for what he believes is morally conscientious. Douglas, on the other hand, attracts his audience through his short but extremely powerful autobiography, which the great abolitionist brilliantly brings out slavery’s corrupting influence on society.     Entering the world of slavery, Fredrick Douglass becomes a distressed, unfortunate, and pusillanimous slave, but develops into a courageous, passionate, and courteous free man and acquaints the world with his poignant and particularly zealous narrative, assisting the audience to grasp onto a greater aspect and superior knowledge on the tyranny of slavery while also enlightening them on the importance of education for slaves desiring freedom. Moreover, the elaborate and complex syntax Frederick Douglass brilliantly applies in the narrative, fabricates a feeling of despondency which ultimately results in entirely engulfing the sympathy of the audience. Frederick Douglass later turns that sympathy into dread by associating the narrative with explicit details of atrocities which then imprint vivid and horrendous images inside the reader’s mind.     Privileged whites in America were still looking down at the blacks and young black poets writing reflects this. Langston Hughes “Let America Be America again”, tells us of the way the blacks wanted to be treated and how each were promised their America when the civil war ended along with slavery. In the poem the lines 31-35 speak of how black were still being treated, “I am the farmer, the bondsman to the soil, I am the worker sold to the machine. I am the Negro, servant to you all. I am the people, humble, hungry, mean-Hungry yet today despite the dream”.
