Dental Hygienist Career Goals

Comm 1002 Voice and Diction- Voice and Diction would be very beneficial to my future career as a dental hygienist because I will be required to speak with patients. Even though dental hygienist don't communicate with their patients during the entire appointment it is necessary to be able to effectively express yourself with the patient. As a dental hygienist you want to make the patient feel comfortable therefore expressing yourself in a comforting manner may be required to accomplish this. A person who is shy and has a low tone of voice would be unfit for this position because you have to be able to communicate with others. Also, dental hygienists have to communicate with the dentist using proper terminology and speaking in a manner that is easy to comprehend.

Comm 4026 Health Communication- Health communication would be an essential course that would be beneficial to my career goals. As a healthcare worker a dental hygienist is a part of a team. This team consists of members such as the receptionist, dental assistant, and the dentist. This class would enable me to be able to communicate information about patients in a professional yet effective manner. If I am not able to effectively communicate with my team members this could result in issues with the company.
Conflict can arise between a patient and I or between me and a team member. This course will allow me to be able to know to act in a situation where conflict is present. I think that knowing how to react in a situation can help deescalate a situation from getting out of hand. Also, knowing how to react toward conflict could keep you from getting fired from the job.
