Composite filling:

Dental composite resins are types of synthetic resins which are used in dentistry as restorative material or adhesives. Synthetic resins evolved as restorative materials since they were insoluble, aesthetic, and insensitive to dehydration and were inexpensive. Unlike Amalgam which essentially just fills a hole and requires retention features to hold the filling, composite cavity restorations when used with dentin and enamel bonding techniques restore the tooth back to near its original physical integrity.

Amalgam filling:
Dental Amalgam is the most commonly used restorative material used for dental fillings. This contains a mixture of mercury with at least one other metal. The amalgam filling has been used for restorative method for many years due to its low cost, durability, ease of application, strength and bacteriostatic effects. The environmental concerns are regarding mercury emissions during preparation and from waste amalgam upon cremation of deceased individuals.

Cinnabar (HgS, the natural compound mercury can be largely found in) was found in caves of France in Spain about 30,000 years ago as paint (Vermilion) from Paleolithic painters due to its bright red pigment. Mercury colored the world of the primal people and it didn't stop there. Many people believed mercury contained miraculous traits like immortality or forming gold. An emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang Di believed that ingesting mercury pills would bless him eternal life. While mercury appears benign it can be quite fatal once in enters the human body. The emperor took these pills, a mixture of mercury and jade, and sought eternal death rather than life. China, however, was not the only civilization to believe (that) mercury had healing properties. The Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians all used mercury in cosmetics and ointments due to its pretty front. Romans, on the other hand, found other uses for mercury in mining fields. Mercury can form amalgams with almost every metal and gold was not the exception. The process of mining the amalgams and distilling out the mercury(since it could easily achieve liquid state) left people with gold or with other desired metals. This innovation sparked riches and curiousity in people but it also carried many health risks. The Romans employed slaves into the mine shafts and many died due to mercury poisoning the lungs or seeping into the skin. Despite these side effects it did not deter the early scientist, or known as the 'alchemists'. Many alchemists believed that adjusting the proportion of sulfur in mercury compounds would produce different metals(in which many hoped to achieve to create gold.). Of course, early alchemists could not achieve their whimsical goals due to their lack of understanding of how elements…

Fluoride has been remarkably successful in reducing the burden of dental caries. While the rise in dental caries, which has occurred in many countries, has been due to an increase in sugar consumption, the fall in caries has been due to the increased use of fluorides. Over 50 years ago, fluoride in drinking water was shown to protect against caries development. Since then, much research has shown that fluoride delivered in ways other than in water also protects against dental caries. These methods include: solutions, gels, toothpastes, mouthrinses, tablets, salt, milk, varnishes, mousses, and slow-release devices. It is common to class these as those providing a systemic effect (where fluoride is swallowed intentionally) and those providing a topical effect (formulated not to be swallowed). However, there is much overlap since these 'systemic' methods provide an important topical effect, and some of these 'topical' agents are swallowed, providing some systemic effect. Another way of classifying these methods is automatic, home-care and professional care. All are effective: they can be used in combination, with increased effectiveness, and the task is to choose appropriately to maximise benefit, especially for those with the greatest need, and at least cost. The World Health Organization has repeatedly promoted the appropriate use of fluorides, as illustrated in the statement adopted in May 2007 in Geneva by the Sixtieth World Health Assembly.…

The unparalleled leadership of American Dentistry beginning in the 1920s developed largely because of the improvement and consistent reliability of dental materials brought about by the research programs at the National Bureau of Standards from 1920s until present day. This advancement in dental science was due to the symbiotic private and public sponsorship of research programs by the cooperative research group between the American Dental Association and the National Bureau of Standards. In the oral history interview of George C. Paffenbarger, D. D. S, he explains his involvement as a researcher and leader in the dental field as well as advancements made due to the work of this research program. Dr. Paffenbarger’s own dedication to purpose and constant endeavor to enhance and expand the science of dental materials is evident in his recollections of programs and events in which he participated. The integration of government regulation in standardizing dental materials was pertinent to the forward growth of the dental field. Dr. Paffenbarger’s account is informative and perceptive, demonstrating how the emerging vision of “professionalism” in American dentistry could be accomplished through the advancements of the dental field.…

Dental (silver) amalgam has been used in various dental applications for more than a century. In fact, the first written record of amalgam being used in dental applications is 1528 .Yet, it is still a very commonly used material today. Amalgam was first made by melting down Spanish or Mexican coins and mixing them with mercury . When it cooled and settled into the cavity, it actually turned black. Bell then evolved this rudimentary procedure into a more controlled alloy in 1819. The substance created a massive wealth for the dental surgeons who promoted its use. However, the substance was actually overused, and in 1845 a convention of dental surgeons agreed to stop its use altogether. They believe that the substance was ineffective, but in actuality it was just overused in situations that it was not designed for. In 1850 it was realized that the substance was irreplaceable and was allowed back…

The dental team will begin by thoroughly cleaning the teeth set to be sealed, and then they will surround the teeth with cotton to keep the area dry. After rinsing and drying the teeth once more, the sealant material is then carefully added to the enamel surface of the teeth to cover deep grooves and depressions. There are multiple types of sealants that can be used, and depending on which one your dentist chooses, it will either harden immediately after application or will require the dentist to use a special curing…

The majority of today’s patients will choose white fillings over silver. The reason for that is the mercury in the amalgam is often viewed as potentially toxic and cause sensitivity. Depending on which tissue it settles in, it will differ from one person to another. The suggested answer is that mercury from fillings doesn 't cause a specific disease. It causes poisoning, and a very small number of people are allergic to metals in the amalgam and may need to have another type of treatment.…
