Demonstrate how Lord of the Flies and Star Mandala represent understandings of change
A Chinese Philosopher once said ‘Change your thoughts and you change your world’
Today I will be talking about change within my novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding and my additional text, an artwork named ‘Star Mandala’. Star Mandala is used as a healing aid for victims of domestic violence, a cause of this is that many of the artists prefer to remain anonymous. In my visual, I represent the top part of the artwork to reflect many of the key themes of the novel Lord of the Flies.
The main difficulty of the novel is the conflict between oneself, their instinct to live by rules and the instinct to act violently to obtain power over others.
This conflict is named Civilization vs. Savagery. (1) Throughout the novel, Golding associates the instinct of civilization with good and the instinct of savagery with evil.
I represent this in my visual by showing the background of the, to the left ‘the evil’ (point) and to the right ‘the good’. (point) (2)
Another theme expressed in my visual is the Signal fire which burns to attract the notice of passing ships.
The signal fire becomes a symbol of the boy’s link to civilization. Early in the novel the boys keep the fire maintained which shows them wanting to be rescued. Later on the fire burns goes out, which shows that the boys have lost their desire to be rescued. (3)
I show this on the visual rep by having a smoke trail, which has a tint of blue to express the loss of hope. (point)
In Star Mandela there is a large star like figure which represents the Signal Fire, the artworks only sense of bright colour represented in the middle, showing the symbol of the boy’s link to civilisation. (point) While the rest of the artwork seems to be very dark, using the colour of blue to express the fearful and sad emotions of the boys on the island. (point)
The idea of loss of innocence is another theme using the artworks use of the colour blue. (4) The boy’s time on the island progress from well-behaved children, to

The signal fire was a symbol of civilization, and the boys’ trying to be rescued. The fire’s smoke was a way to get passing ships to notice them. At the beginning the boys were all helping with letting the fire burn, but as the boys began to hunt like savages, the fire begins to die away, symbolizing their desire for rescue was low. Eventually, the signal fire does vanish when the boys joined Jack’s tribe. Ironically, a fire does save the boys, but it was not the signal fire. Instead it was Ralph’s death fire that attracted a Navy ship. The signal fire stood for a sign of rescue, but by the end none of the savage boys wanted to be saved.…

"Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed."-Mahatma Gandhi. Everything man needs is right in front of them, but human nature drives them to be evil. Smoke Signals is about the journey Thomas and Victor have while collecting the ashes of Arnold Joseph. Thomas sees this journey as his vision quest. The vision quest came to him in the form of Spokane Falls, and while there, Arnold appeared to him, as if in a dream. This faith is called animism, the belief in spiritual entities, souls, and spirits.( Connard Phillip Kottak, Mirror for Humanity: a Concise Introduction to Cultural Anthropology ( New York: McGraw-Hill, 2010), 191.) These trance states are part of Native American culture. These vision quests are a rite of passage for Native Americans.( IBID., 195.) Rites of passage are events that transform one…

The page following the book’s title depicts a scene at sea. The whole image is washed with a dark blue from the sky to the ocean, and the crashing waves convey a menacing journey has taken place. At the bottom of the page, if one looks closely, it is evident that the bottom of the wooden raft has been drawn but blends into the rest of the image. This inclusion of the raft changes the perspective of the image as the responder is now been positioned as if they were looking out from the raft, the place of the Man. An immediate bond has now been formed between the responder and the man, and for the rest of the text we continue to sympathise with him.…

The conflict between two competing impulses that exist within all human beings: the instinct to live by rules, act peacefully, follow moral commands, and value the good of the group against the instinct to gratify one’s immediate desires, act violently to obtain supremacy over others, and enforce one’s will. This conflict might be expressed in a number of ways: civilization vs. savagery, order vs. chaos, reason vs. impulse, law vs. anarchy, or the broader heading of good vs. evil. Throughout the novel, Golding associates the instinct of civilization with good and the instinct of savagery with evil.…

<br>The Hearth and the Salamander, the title of part one, is the first example of symbolism. The title suggests two things having to do with fire, the hearth is a source of warmth and goodness, showing the positive, non-destructive side of fire. Whereas a salamander is a small lizard-like amphibian, and also in mythology, is known to endure fire without getting burnt by it. Perhaps the salamander is symbolic of Guy Montag, who is being described as a salamander because he works with fire, and endures it, but believes that he can escape the fire and survive, much like a salamander does. On the other hand, it is ironic that Guy, and the other firemen believe themselves to be salamanders because both Capt. Beatty's and Montag's destruction comes from the all mighty flame, from which they thought they were invincible.…
