Dell's Business Structure Overview
Dell is one of the leading computer technology companies in the world. But what makes their name stand out above so many others? In this paper, I will take a closer look at Dell and analyze the different Operations Management of the organization. More specifically, I will discuss Dell’s main line of business, specific type of operations process that they use, describe its nature of operations, and identify their global strategy.
First, let’s talk about Dell and its main line of business. This company is one of the leading computer technology manufacturers in the world. Dell’s original claim to fame was through their custom-built computers that were specifically geared towards the end user. Dell has expanded their product line to include servers, data storage devices, network switches, software, computer peripherals, HDTVs, cameras, printers, MP3 players and also electronics built by other manufacturers .
Next, there is the area of Dell’s operations process. Although they are known for their mass production of computer manufacturing, they are also known for their outstanding customer service for the products they create. This added feature of support is comes with all of their products, giving their customer’s easy access to help when it is needed. None the less, without the production of their products, there would be nothing to support, therefore Dell is categorized under the product side of the operations process.
Thirdly, is Dell’s nature of operations. The well-known operation model of Dell called ‘Dell Direct’, eliminates intermediaries in procurement, manufacturing, and the distribution process. The technology used byt the company in the manufacturing process is the base of their success and therefore a very important role in operations for the company. This strategy allows the company to combine its resources, its relationship with suppliers, and its consumer communications capabilities, developing one big advantage over its competitors.
