The Decline of Roman Empire and Rise of Christianity

The Roman Empire was one of the greatest empires ever. The empire was very strong for the most part. The Roman empire fell because of internal problems in the the society and government. It didn’t fall drastically: it slowly lost power. The Roman Empire was huge, so the government had a lot of responsibility. The government even divided Rome into separate parts to be governed by more than one person. At one time the Roman Empire was divided into four parts with four different emperors. Rome went through a lot as an empire. Rome had three major parts in its history of government: Pre-Republic, Republic, and the Empire. During Pre-Republic there was the founding of Rome. He would perform miracles and teach the Gospel around Galilee. The Jews didn’t like him much they would always plot against him: trying to get him to sin or speak against Caesar. Jesus Christ healed a man on the Sabbath day. That made the Pharisees that conspired against him angry. They wanted to kill him. Jesus was betrayed by his own follower Judas; who led the officials to Jesus in Gethsemane. The officials arrested him and sent him to trial. There were five different trials before Jesus was sentenced to be crucified. They official crucified him and three days later he ressurected. Jesus Christ stayed on earth with his disciples for forty more days; then he ascended to heaven. The disciples were sent the Holy Spirit and they continued to teach other about Jesus. Christianity soon spread around Rome. Emperors only tolerated Christians until the time of Nero. He persecuted Christians for no reason. Soon Constantine was emperor and was converted to Christianity so Christianity was declared a legal religion and persecutions stopped. Fifty years later another emperor came along named Julian tried to bring persecution back but it didn’t work. The more Christians were persecuted the more the religion multiplied. People saw how brave Christians were to still stand for what they believe in no matter what. This made more people want to convert to Christianity. The Roman Empire finally accepted

    From its founding in the eighth century BCE to its western collapse in 476 CE, Rome’s governmental structure changed considerably. After a brief period of monarchy, the Roman Republic was established. The republic rules for several centuries, ruling by the voice of the people. Senators represented the interested of Roman citizens. However, with the reign of Caesar, this changed. Rome became an empire ruled by a single emperor. His dictatorial rule was imposed upon the people without their consent, starkly different from the elected representatives of the republican era. Later, Diocletian decided to split the empire, causing two separate political entities to develop; the Western and Eastern Roman Empires. This destroyed Rome’s original unified imperial structure and gave it a more regional character. The strength of the bold empire was lost. Also, Roman political attitudes toward religion changed during its history. Traditionally, Rome was pagan, with most worshipping a polytheistic religion sponsored by the state. Later, Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, and Rome became a Christian empire. This was much different from the pagan beliefs of long ago.     Although the form of government in the Roman Empire changed several times over its thousand year history, many parts remained the same and it has served as a model, inspiring the founding fathers as they created the governmental system of the United States of America almost 2,000 years later. Scattered around seven hills in the middle of the Italian peninsula, Rome began as a simple village of wooden huts. As it grew, it became governed by a monarchy, with a king having complete control. This lasted for over 200 years until the king was overthrown and a republic form of government was developed. This form of government worked well and the Roman Empire prospered.     There were many reasons for the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Each document in this essay explains a different reason. Some causes were: political, economic, social, and military differences and problems. Basically, the problem was that the gap between the rich aristocrats and the poor serfs got bigger and bigger; the rich got richer as the poor got poorer. Also, when something grows, it always falls back down. In Document 1, an excerpt from a book was taken out. According to the authors, the basic problems facing the Western Roman Empire came from the people that gave up devotion to the old civilization and didn't believe that it was worth saving. Why should they care about their land if they weren't allowed to take part in government say, they couldn't form groups to protect themselves, and were even excluded from their own army? The practically jobless people realized that their cities were slowly falling, but no one bothered to stop their decline; it was something that had to happen. The loss of popular support to the oppressive government, increased government corruption, division of the empire, and internal power struggles were some political causes that led to the fall of Rome. In Document 2, two causes for the fall of Rome were: the large size, and the introduction to Christianity. Because the Empire grew too large, it became uneasy to control. It was inevitable for the fall to occur, no matter how much anyone tried. Jesus' introduction to Christianity also started a change. The clergy (priests) helped change the moral values of society. It no longer mattered much, and military power was buried or thrown away. The rich's wealth was taken away and given to charity (poor). In Document 3, the Muller's explanation for the decline was an economic issue. As the Empire grew stronger, so did economy.
