Does the Declaration of Independence speak for itself?
At the time and for its purpose – yes it does.
Is its meaning self-evident?
Yes. It declares to King George III and the world that all ties with Great Britain are severed.
Why or why not?
It informs of the causes which impel them to the separation.

What person or persons composed it?
The Second Continental Congress appointed a Committee of Five to write the Declaration of Independence. The five were John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson drafted the document.
What were their motivations; intentions; goals; agenda?
To be independent of Great Britain and to will govern themselves.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
3. What impact did the intellectual world of the time have on its composition?
Jefferson had interests in philosophy, quantification, classification, and observation which would of course influence his thinking when drafting the Declaration of Independence. Yet, Jefferson states in “Objects of Declaration of Independence,” that “it was intended to be an expression of the American mind and to give to that expression the proper tone and spirit called for by the occasion.” He explains to the world the reasons for separation.
The Declaration of Independence addresses natural rights of man as well as man’s consent to be governed.

Jefferson believed that the science of government, like the sciences of agriculture or celestial mechanics, would gradually take its place in the advancement of humankind.

    Delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies congregated in Philadelphia to discuss the matter of separation from England. Georgia did not send delegates to represent their colony. There was one man who was 100% ready to vote for independence, his name was James Wilson.
