David Bowie's Song 'Heroes'
Music’s eternal shape-shifter David Bowie wonders if we could be “Heroes” if just for one day. Often cited as a pinnacle in David Bowie’s career, “Heroes” features some of Bowie’s most evocative lyrics and greatest show of his perfectly imperfect voice. Chugging forward with boundless energy the song builds up barriers of sound only to break them down a minute later. One of Bowie’s greatest achievements as a musician, the song is a perfect way to end a wonderful soundtrack. While Perks fans know the tunnel song was never mentioned in the novel, this song quietly plays in the background during the tunnel scene.

    At 8:46 A.M. on September 11th 2001, flight 11 hit the North Tower in New York City. The plane hit between the 93rd and the 99th floor killing over 1,300 people instantaneously. Unfortunately, there was still a struggle for those under the initial point of impact; on the 88th floor Frank DeMartini and Pablo Ortiz, both just your average Port Authority workers, decided, without even thinking about their own lives, to gather and locate the remaining survivors on their floor. As they started their descent down to safety they heard noises coming from the people on the 89th floor; they again put their lives in jeopardy to help others. Nicole DeMartini, Frank’s wife, was on her way out of the building when her husband called down to her, “I’ll be right behind you.” These two ordinary civilians, not once thinking about themselves, saved the lives of 77 people on the 88th, 89th, 90th, 91st, and the 86th floor. Both of them were killed when the tower collapsed and no remains were ever found, but the families of Frank DeMartini and Pablo Ortiz should be very proud of what these brave heroes have done.…

    At the beginning of the novel, from the reader’s perspective Spicer gives the impression of being a young boy, in particular with his refusal to eat after they have murdered Hale. “I’ll be sick...if I eat” The Boy then responds with “Spew then”, this suggests that Spicer has a weakness especially within the group. As well as this it implies that Spicer regrets or feels a large amount of emotion towards the act they have just committed unlike Pinkie who seems totally unfazed. However, as the book continues we learn that Spicer is an older man as we are told of his “spots” that appear as well as “upset...bowels”, his “carroty” hair and his “scarred” nose. The sympathy the reader felt before then changes to loathing, as these new descriptions create an unattractive image for the reader. As well as this his earlier weakness now comes across as spineless and almost pathetic. We also learn that Spicer used to be a Jew “but a hairdresser and surgeon had altered that”. This reiterates the point that Spicer is spineless as he can’t even stand by his religion unlike Pinkie who has very strong religious views.…

    The song “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay shows the classic example of how power can corrupt the lives of people who do not know how to wield it. The speaker of the song (who is implied to be a past king) constantly references his past experiences in order to relay this message. For example, when the speaker says, “I used to roll the dice/ Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes… / Next the walls were closed on me” he is referring to how he gambled with his power and eventually lost everything and was jailed as a result. Likewise, this is reinforced when the speaker states, “Shattered windows and the sound of drums/ People couldn't believe what I'd become”. Moreover, as a result of the speaker abusing his power, the general public started to revolt against him; which is proven when the speaker states, “Revolutionaries wait/ For my head on a silver plate”. Finally, many of the lyrics used in the song, such as: “missionaries, “Revolutionaries”, “Roman cavalry”, and “Jerusalem bells” relate to the era of the Crusaders. This leads to the conclusion that the song is about the past experiences of a king and not a different kind of authority figure (president, commander, and etc.). Therefore, in the song “Viva la Vida”, the band Coldplay uses the experiences of a king in order to relay the message of how power can corrupt the life of a person who wields it incorrectly.…
