Following A CHILD CALLED "IT" and THE LOST BOY, Dave Pelzer's latest book in the trilogy, A MAN NAMED DAVE, is his journey from youth to manhood. A powerful testimony to the resilience of the human spirit, A MAN NAMED DAVE details some of Dave's early childhood experiences as the son of a brutal, alcoholic mother. He knows his mother under many guises: the preferred Mommy but, more often, The Mother. He is known as "the boy" or "it" rather than by his name. She tortures him until lies told to school personnel no longer are believable --- he is rescued and placed into foster care at the age of 12.…

Anyone that reads the horrific experiences that Dave Pelzer had to go through would be sure to report any possible case of child abuse that they witness. This is very important because even a small case of abuse should not be gone with being reported. “One in five children are physically, sexually, or emotionally abused in our country” (Pelzer 161). This statistic is crazy. Basically in a class of twenty-five, five students have been abused in their life. This is a crime that needs to be controlled. By reading this book, students become more aware of situations and also find ways to help.…

Child abuse in America is seen every day on the news and in newspaper articles. Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. Every year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States involving more than six million (a report can include multiple children). The United States has among the worst records among industrialized nations-losing an average between four and seven children every day to child abuse and neglect. (National, Internet) America has tried to take a stand against child abuse but they cannot catch all abusers in this country. The general statistics are hard to believe since we don’t notice it in our homes or within schools. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds. It is said that more than four children die every day as a result of child abuse. It is estimated that between fifty to sixty percent of child fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded as such on death certificates. Approximately eighty percent of children that die from abuse are under the age of four. It is hard to believe that about thirty percent of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the horrible cycle. (National, Internet)…

It is very important to understand the dynamics of a social problem in order to raise awareness and possibly make a change in a society. Among many crucial social problems in the American society, child abuse is one of the most devastating issues that result in people, and more specifically children, with a traumatized past, shattered dreams, and more often than not, fatal consequences. National statistics on child abuse reports just about five deaths a day among neglected and abused children. According to a 2009 statistics, there were 1,770 deaths reported as a consequence of child abuse and neglect. The issue of child abuse and neglect is a crucial one, as it puts not only lives of children in jeopardy but also the future of that society. It is no secret that the negative impacts of this social problem alone can contribute the breeding of other important issues in our society such as: violence, gangs and crime, psychopathology, maladaptive behaviors, dysfunctional families, physiological and medical conditions and many others. The reported data alone is alarming enough; however, it is also important to realize that the statistics are based merely on the cases that have actually been reported. There are thousands of cases of child abuse that go unnoticed and unreported each and every year. To imagine what victims of these cases undergo on their own is even more frightening. They must endure fighting a battle each and every day in which they will never have control over.…

At least 3.3 million reports of child abuse are made every year involving more than 6 million children (sometime multiple children in a report). Every ten seconds, there is a new report of child abuse in America (Childhelp). It has been a controversial issue as to what punishment should be brought to those who know of a child being abused, but does not report it. To carry knowledge of a child being abused but failing to report it should consequence in subjection to imprisonment, equal to that of the abuser. Abused children should be brought to a caring, adoptive family or to other family members who show love for the child, and it should never be an option for the abusing parents (if parents) to regain custody of their children. When the abuse is not reported, the abuser may continue the abuse, abuse other children, and the children might one day abuse their own children.…

As time passes we tend to ignore some of the most important situations that are and have been taking place, such as child abuse. Although it is not often spoken of in the United States, child abuse continues to be one of the growing social problems of the country, keeping in mind the number of children who end up in protective services each year is increasing. Usually sexual abuse and physical abuse of adults is given more attention, compared to child abuse. It is proven that neglecting along with emotional mistreatment is also facets of child abuse. As we are getting more educated on these matters, aid and treatment for the victims of child abuse has most definitely gotten better over the years; however it wasn’t like this a few decades ago. The first child abusing reporting law was seen in California in 1963; however, only medical professionals (particularly physicians) were required by law to…
