Success is the best revenge. Perhaps one of the best examples of this famous saying in history is Dante Alighieri. A prominent politician in 13th century Florence, Alighieri was exiled by Pope Boniface VII and the Black Guelph political party (Toynbee 98). Naturally, when Alighieri was exiled from his home country, he carried more than a few grudges and perceived slights against him. Luckily for history, Alighieri was not the kind of man to simply send a rude letter in the mail to Pope Boniface. He was the kind of man to write a 14,000 line epic poem would be so groundbreaking, controversial, and well written that it would transcend the barriers of language and time too get analyzed by college students 700 years later.…

In my opinion i think that Gustave Dore's is best to illustrate Dante's Inferno. In the 9 circles of hell it talks about evil gruesome torments and Dore’s pictures best fit the description of dark and evil.…
Dante Alighieir was the creator of a long poem called the Divine Comedy, which influenced many writers that came after him. Dante's poem foreshadows literary ideas and writings that show up later in the Italian Renaissance. Italian writers after Dante continued the use of Greco-Roman classical themes and mythology in their works. Not only did Dante carry out a new way of writing, but so did an English poet named Geoffrey Chaucer by writing humorous and earthy short stories. Dante also influenced the literary movement of the humanists, by inspiring and encouraging them with his stories to spread the use of Greco-Roman ideas.…

The fruits of the tree were sprinkled with his blood, and changed to a dark purple hue.The roots, soaked in his gore, tinged the hanging berries with the same rich colour. We in the twentieth century would be much more hard-pressed to define evil than would people of either Chaucer's or Dante's time. Medieval Christians would have a source for it -- Satan -- and if could easily devise a series of ecclesiastical checklists to test its presence and its power. In our secular world, evil has come down to something that hurts people for no explicable reason: the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, the burning of black churches in the South. We have taken evil out of the hands of Satan, and placed it in the hands of man. In doing so, we have made it less absolute, and in many ways less real.…
Throughout the fast-paced lives of people, we are constantly making choices that shape who we are, as well as the world around us; however, one often debates the manner in which one should come to correct moral decisions, and achieve a virtuous existence. Dante has an uncanny ability to represent with such precision, the trials of the everyman's soul to achieve morality and find unity with God, while setting forth the beauty, humor, and horror of human life. Dante immediately links his own personal experience to that of all of humanity, as he proclaims, "Midway along the journey of our life / I woke to find myself in a dark wood, / for I had wandered off from the straight path" (I.1-3). The dark wood is the sinful life on earth, and the straight path is that of the virtuous life that leads to God. Dante's everyman, pilgrim…
In brief, for Dante, the possible intellect, which is identified with the human mind, represents the most noble part of the immortal soul, and comes from God, as from God comes the limited knowledge granted to man and his natural need for knowledge of science, whose contentment is constituted by the supreme happiness in man's earthly life, where to be blessed means to settle for what philosophy can reveal, according the limits of the natural reason. Dante clarified this concept into Convivio:” The most noble thing, and that which is written down as the goal of all others, is to be satisfied, and this is being blessed ; and this pleasure is verily (although in another way) in her aspect ; for, by gazing upon her, folk are satisfied (so sweetly…

Dante’s journey began by meeting Virgil who is described throughout the story as Dante’s guide, master, teacher, protector and Lord. Virgil stated to Dante, “I think it well you follow me and I will be your guide and lead you forth through an eternal place.” “There you shall see the ancient spirits tried in endless pain,” (Canto I:105-110)…
In the Inferno, mutilation is the most common way for those in hell to be given the ineluctable punishment for their sins. Mutilation is an act or physical injury that degrades the appearance or function of the body. Mutilation is both used in the inferno as a way to cause physical pain to those in hell, but the form of mutilation used on the sinners is also a form of emotional torture because it pertains directly to their sin. Because mutilation is used so frequently in the inferno Dante must use varying ways to depict the mutilation that is forced on the sinners. Dante uses vivid imagery, Homeric similes, and symbolism to help develop the theme of mutilation as he travels through the Inferno.…
By the time Dante was born Italy had become the largest economic center of the western world, and the advantage of the capitalist economy had given them the opportunity to obtain immeasurable wealth. Once the serfs were not serfs anymore they became a huge benefit to the economy by creating wealth. The serfs also wanted to have a new system of government called republicanism which was already in place in ancient Greece and Rome. The aristocrats opposed this system of government because it gave everyone a voice not just the wealthy and elite class of society. Despite the opposition the new system of government was installed, and they began to make decisions by a majority rules vote. At the time when Dane was getting involved in the political spectrum they were electing 12 Mayors per year. They did this to keep any one Mayor from becoming too strong. Dante was elected Mayor for a three month term which was dissatisfying to him.…
