Eric's symptoms include: large hands and feet, low thyroid activity, low cortisone levels, low testosterone levels, high growth hormone levels, and swelling in his right knee. Since most of Eric's symptoms are hormonal, he is clearly having an endocrine gland problem. Cortisone, testosterone, and growth hormone levels are being affected, it is likely that he his having a hormonal problem within his anterior pituitary gland, because all three of these hormones are regulated by a horomone that this gland secretes. Cortisone is controlled by ACTH, testosterone by LH and FSH, and growth hormone by the anterior pituitary gland itself. Not to mention, the thyroid is regulated by the thyroid-stimulating hormone, which is also released by the anterior pituitary gland.…

Cushing’s syndrome is the term used to describe a group of symptoms that occur when a persons’ cortisol levels are too high (known as hypercortisolism) for too long. The majority of people have Cushing’s syndrome because they are regularly taking certain medicine(s) that continually add too much cortisol to the body. Doctors call this an “exogenous” (outside the body) cause of Cushing’s syndrome. Other people have Cushing’s syndrome because something is causing the adrenal gland(s) to overproduce cortisol.5 Doctors call this an “endogenous” (inside the body) cause of Cushing’s syndrome.…

Metoprolol is a beta-Adrenergic blocking agent. Beta receptors are part of the sympathetic nervous system and are found on cells of the heart, smooth muscles, in airways, arteries and kidneys. Associated with stress response, they are stimulated by epinephrine. Beta blockers interfere with the binding of epinephrine at the receptors. Metoprolol works by inhibiting the response to adrenergic stimuli by blocking beta one adrenergic receptors within the myocardium. (Hoffman, Jones Reeder, & Rodgers, 2000) Conduction is slowed through the SA and AV nodes. A decrease in the resting heart rate and negative inotropic effects are seen; thus decreasing the cardiac output at rest and during exercise. Reduction of blood pressure is achieved by decreasing the cardiac output, decreasing sympathetic outflow from the CNS, as well as suppressing renin release which reduces peripheral vascular resistance. When treating Cushing Syndrome, doctors will try to lower the high levels of cortisol in the body.
