Cultural diversity is an essential basic foundation in today’s society. Much of the daily tasks of an individual, involves some types of interactions with others of different ethnic groups and cultural background. In order for an organization to be successful, it must be able to have an open mindset and embrace diversity as a whole. Part of being able to recognize diversity and multiculturalism in a specific organization is reflected towards their Web site. Therefore, in order to understand and analyze an organization’s approach on cultural diversity, this research paper will examine the diversity of Sentara Healthcare Organization (https://www.sentara.com). This organization’s perspective on diversity has become very prominent and therefore on its web site, information in regards to diversity are well easily accessible by means of searching the term into the search toolbar. The Sentara homepage does not have a direct link to the diversity page. Therefore, information on diversity may not readily be available upon launching onto their website, (www.sentara.com). It is necessary to explore its web site or by searching it in the search toolbar in order to access the information. Upon entering the term “diversity” into the search box, it will then filter results for links such as “Cultural Diversity at Sentara RMH” and “Diversity.” (Sentara, 2016) If clicked on the “Diversity” link from the search results, it will direct to the information in regards to their commitment in diversity, as well as their missions and values. “Primary dimensions, those social group memberships that are fixed and usually central to one’s self-identity such as race, ethnicity, age, gender, mental and physical abilities, and sexual orientation.” (Harvey & Allard, 2015, p. 56) These primary dimensions are evident in the Sentara web site, by stating that their healthcare services expand all types of individuals by taking into account their race, ethnicity, gender, age, and sexual orientation. On the other hand, its consideration on patient’s language, religion, socioeconomic status and family structure are all classifications of the secondary dimensions. “Secondary dimensions, those characteristics that are usually more changeable, not as visible, and less central to one’s experience such as income, religion, communication style, marital status, appearance, and first language.” (Harvey & Allard, 2015, p. 57) Individuals such as potential employees, customers, and suppliers will find the Sentara homepage to be of a guidance in helping them obtain or learn more information about this organization and their perspective on diversity especially having it easy to navigate and well-organize.
