Johnson said. “What now?” “Now? I’ll have to take that coffee away unless you can pay for it.” The waiter said slightly grinning. Angrily Mr. Johnson grabs the coffee and throws the hot, creamy liquid over the young waiter. Before heading out the door he said, “I’ll be sure to call your manager and get you fired!” Outside the coffee shop, the homeless man from before still begging for cash half walks, half wobbles up to Mr. Johnson. “Eh sir can you spare some money for a hungry man?” Mr. Johnson looked into his wallet and saw $2.50, lying he said, “Not today I don't have any money.” “You look like a wealthy man. Anything at all would be appreciated,”said the hungry man. “Why don't you go get a job and make your own money for a change,” replied Mr. Johnson. After that statement the homeless man, in disgust, left to the other side of the street to ask some more people. Mr. Johnson noticed the sky a little bit darker and looked at his watch. The time read 7:10. “I better get home,” he thought to himself. Back at his apartment Mr. Johnson waits another 2 hours until Mrs. Johnson arrives. “How was your day?” asked Mr.

It was settled, the Johnsons were relocating to Bellingham, Washington; since Papa cannot sustain the work in the country. John liked the idea of moving to the city, but Hilda and Lois were not so thrilled. Their house in Bellingham was modern, and John was delighted. From the window, you could see the magnificent Mount Baker. Papa and Hilda started talking about how Mount Baker was like God, making John feel awkward. The girls were a bit worried going to school even with John’s encouragement. After class, John’s classmate, Marvin, led him to the railroad tracks where he got him to smoke a cigarette brought by a fifth-grader named Pete. As they parted, John ran home in dismay, anxious that his parents might find out. When he got home, John saw Mama chopping down some onions, so he ate a piece to take the smell of the cigarette out. John felt guilty for smoking, but thought that at least he did something to please his father by chopping down some wood.…

I toss the man’s wallet and cheap starling silver watch onto the uneven table and pull out the catch of the day, counting the money enclosed. Two grand, not bad. I’d been studying the man when he made the bet on a silly card game from the outside of the bar he was in. I’d watched him win and watched one of the bouncers press the thick envelope into his hand as he walked out the bar cockily. As he smugly walked into the cold winds that waited outside I ran to the postal store down the street and bought an envelope and wrote the note placed inside. I then left the store trailing the man at a comfortable…

The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…
