Cracking The Code Of Life Response
Response #2: Cracking the Code of Life

After watching the film "Cracking the Code of Life", I was surprised to learn that all humans
Genetic makeup is 99.9% identical. Dr. Eric Landers, a leader in the Human Genome project, states that humans are so similar to one another because they are a young species with a small amount of time to receive mutations. The modern form of humans today has only been around for roughly 200,000 years. It takes over 1 million years for a human to receive mutations.

This surprised me because despite the fact that humans come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and places, only 1% of their genetic makeup is different. Even if the modern human has only been around for 200,000 years, 200,000 years is

The video took a classroom of students of all different ethnic backgrounds and presented them with a question of “who does each of the students, by taking a MtDNA sample of themselves, think that their sample would match their classmates?” Of course, the students thought that their MtDNA would match another classmate who resembled their skin color. However, they were all wrong. In fact, they found that they were very similar to each other. Further, those whose skin color that differed from each other were the closes to each other. This experiment showed that the human race was not any different from their counterparts.…

In the film, Race: Power of an Illusion, students were asked who they thought their DNA would most be related to. Students chose classmates who had a similar skin color to their own and people who lived in regions of their ancestors. These students were very surprised when the results of their experiments were returned and they discovered they were very closely related to all humans. Students were also shocked to learn “race” was only skin deep. Beneath the skin, humans are one of the most closely related species. The narrator of the film then states the research of geneticist that discovered that 85% of all genetic deviations can be found within any local population, regardless of where they are from.…

Heritability is commonly misunderstood. It shows the relationship between nature and nurture by the numerical estimate of the diversity within a population. As humans, we live all over the world in different areas and climates. We have traits brought out by natural selection to adapt to the area we live in. Our skin color, body type, height, and hair color all play a role in the environment we live in. Thus is why race is not always a good way to describe cultural differences in humans. If we were to classify the human race by this different criteria, it would produce different groupings.…
