Cowspiracy: As The World Tackles Climate Change
This August, a friend of mine who is passionate about climate change and food justice recommended to me the documentary Cowspiracy because it played a huge role in her becoming a vegan. I watched it with my mom, and both of us immediately became vegetarians. The documentary discussed, analyzed, and brought to light animal agriculture’s significant role in climate change. I used to love meat—particularly hamburgers and bacon—but the evidence that the film presented on animal agriculture’s impact on the environment, was terrifying. In this weekly post, I decided to look more into the role of animal agriculture on the environment through Alexandra Clark’s, a sustainable-food campaigner at Humane Society International, article “As the World Tackles Climate Change, is Meat Off the Table” in LiveScience. …show more content…
To back up her argument, she examens everything that leads up to the meat that we eat, including the land used, the animal feed, and the quantity of water used. I learned that “animal agriculture is the greatest reason for land use globally, and that 69.9 lbs of feed will produce 2lbs of beef. In Cowspiracy, this phenomena is discussed through two images 1) eating a hamburger uses as much water as two months of showering, 2) if all of the feed in Africa went to humans instead, there would not be an hunger in Africa. The current industrial approach to livestock has birthed an issue pertaining to the sustainability and healthy feeding of our lives.     Nibert argues about the treatment of domesticated animals on factory farms. Many campaigns, legislations, and ballots have made people switch over to a safe and friendly way of obtaining our food. This strategy called the new welfarism promotes continued oppression of domesecrated and the underlying global injustices and dangers that accompany it (Nibert 259). The welfarism reflects the historical pattern of elites consuming our “meat.” The more affluent consume our chemical free, “humanely” produced “meat,” while the majority consumes the cheap toll that the animal industrial complex profitably can produce.     An analysis by Rich Pirog, who works for the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, reveals that “transportation accounts for only 11% of food’s carbon footprint” (Source C). The way locavores manipulate the calculation of food miles to fit their argument is highly inaccurate. For example, “a shipper sending a truck with 2,000 apples over 2,000 miles would consume the same amount of fuel per apple as a local farmer who takes a pickup 50 miles to sell 50 apples” (Source C). Eating locally is not a solution to lessening food’s carbon footprint, “[t]he critical measure [in this scenario] is not food miles, but rather apples per gallon” (Source C). He further claims that “[a] fourth of the energy required to produce food is expended in the consumer’s kitchen” (Source C). This statement is further illustrated in the chart in Source D.     A graph in an environmental magazine illustrates the number of greenhouse gas emitted with most of the greenhouse gas emissions coming from production, not transport, as most people would think (Source D). This graph illustrates, contrary to common perception, that most of the greenhouse gases produced are dependent on the how the food was produced, rather than how the food was shipped. Therefore, eating locally would not necessarily save the earth from much greenhouse gas emissions. Similarly, James McWilliams argues that “New Zealand lamb is raised on pastures with a small carbon footprint, whereas most English lamb is produced under intensive factory-like conditions with a big carbon footprint” (Source C). McWilliams’s statement illustrates how buying local foods can be harmful to the environment.
