In that society were a group of villagers who had a tradition. A human sacrifice was needed in order to harvest good crops. Although the traditions and corruption did not change or evolve, times had changed. The society was insensitive about the human sacrifice. The story is based on the holocaust, those not affected by it did not care. In the lottery people who did not get picked just followed the tradition without caring until they were affected.
