Core Public Health Nursing Role Model

Public Health Nursing (PHN) helps establish and identify health inequalities within the community, national and global levels. Public Health Nurses collaborate with local and government agencies to discuss various health issues and how policies and procedures can assist with implementing change. Public health nurses advocate to bring health disparities within diverse populations to the forefront. Furthermore, educating the world regarding health issues that may not receive coverage.

The Core Public Health Functions Model is comprised of three core function components which are assessment, policy development and assurance. Nursing related examples of the assessment component include providing vital statistics of AIDS to high school students and the collection of data regarding AIDS in a high risk community and analyzing the efforts to control the occurrence of new cases. Nursing related examples of the policy development component include meeting with the church and community leaders regarding how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act can positively impact the community and advocating regarding the health services the public receives are of the highest quality. Nursing related examples of the assurance component include providing an information session within high schools regarding the nursing profession and evaluating various health programs within schools.

Throughout the years, the role of the public health nurse has remained unchanged.
