Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate Lab Report
Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate
Purpose: To verify the formula for copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate by measuring the amount of water decomposed from the hydrated species.

MSDS: Copper sulfate pentahydrate- Harmful if swallowed. Causes skin irritation, causes serious eye irritation. Very toxic to aquatic life with long effects. If copper sulfate stays in the stomach, the victim becomes unconscious. The symptoms of poisoning include diarrhea, headache and injury to vital organs.

Background:
1.Describe the correct method of using weighing paper to retrieve the required amount of the solid crystalline chemical. Put weigning paper on the balance, zero the balance, and then put chemicals on the paper.
2. How do you “zero” the balance? You can zero the balance by hitting the “tare” button.
3. Why should you always check that the balance reads “0.00 g”? Otherwise the results won’t be accurate.
4. What is a hydrate compound? The compound that forms solid crytals with a fixed amount of water.

Procedure:
1) Follow normal lab safety rules, wear safety goggles, and aprons.
2)

After this lab, I learned that the water in CuSO4* 5H2O can be removed by heating it with a propane burner. After the water was evaporated, you can use the loss in mass to calculate the amount of water initally in copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate. Once all water in copper (II) Sulfate pentahydrate are evaporated, the ionic compound is anhydrous, you can regenerate the anhydrous compound by adding water. Also, before the water in copper (II) sulfate was evaporated, it was in the color of sky blue, but the anyhydrous copper(II) sulfate is in the form of crystals that are Cyan-white. By adding the water, the regenerated compound turns to sky blue again, thus, copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate is sky blue because it contains water in

Conclusion: The purpose of this lab was to visually see the chemical change that was taking place when hydrates gain and lose water. The formula for blue hydrate is anhydrous copper (ii) sulfate (CuSO4). The percent error for the mass of water is -94.40%. The effect of the hydrate not being heated long enough would result in water still being in the hydrate. If the test tube was not dried completely prior to the initial measurement it would cause the data to follow that incorrect measurement to be false and it would also add more water into the hydrate than what was initially projected. If the anhydride was allowed to sit over before the final mass measurement was taken it would result in more water loss from the hydrate. The moles of CuSO4…

Copper Cycle Summary During the copper cycle lab, my partners and I performed a series of reactions on copper powder and observed the changes it underwent. For the first step, we mixed nitric acid and copper powder, and noticed that a yellowish brown gas emerged, along with effervescence. The red solid disappeared and became a blue liquid.…

A sample of copper sulfate pentahydrate (6.285g) was weighed out. The copper sulfate pentahydrate was dissolved in water (11.99mL) in a 250mL beaker. The solution was heated on a hot plate to 90 degrees Celsius. A sample of potassium oxalate monohydrate (10.006g) was dissolved in water (50.0mL).…

This is supported by the experimental data collected from the experiment. From our data, it can be easily calculated that the mass of the lost water was .96g and the anhydrous salt left behind massed at 1.49g. Using this information it can be determine the moles of each substance (.96g/18.02g=.053 moles of water, and 1.49g/159.62=.00933 moles of anhydrous salt). This is possible to calculate due to the scientific understanding that the mass of an element in grams divided by its average atomic mass will calculate the moles it’s equivalent to. After calculating the moles of each, the ratio .053 moles of water to .00933 moles of anhydrous salt is formed. Then, by dividing the moles of water by the moles of anhydrous salt a ratio between the two will be formed. This is because of a scientific principle that when dividing the moles of one molecule by another will result in a proportion of moles of one element to 1 mole of the other. The calculation produces 5.6806 moles of water/1 mole of anhydrous salt and after rounding to the nearest whole number the ratio 6 moles of water to 1 mole of anhydrous salt forms. Last, when plugged into the chemical formula of the hydrate (copper (ii) sulfate), the result is 1CuSO46H2O, which is the formula of the…

A hydrate is a substance that holds water in a certain ratio. As Hydrates are compounds with constant composition, we were able to easily determine this ratio by evaporating the water and then calculating a common ratio. We had Copper sulfate pentahydrous. In our experiment and on further calculations we observed that generally ten molecules of water combine with one molecule of…

Hydrates are chemical compounds that contain discrete water molecules as part of their crystalline structure. Water is bound in most hydrates in definite, stoichiometric proportions, and the number of water molecules bound per metal ion is often characteristic of a particular metal ion. Many hydrated salts can be transformed to the anhydrous (without water) compound by application of heat. In this experiment, we determine the empirical formula of copper (II) sulfate – CuSO4.…

One is that when a hydrate is heated up, it will change colors indicating that there is a reaction occurring. Also, that the color change is a physical change since the anhydrous Copper (II) Sulfate could be hydrated again by adding water. When the water is added back to the compound, heat is released and it sizzles as it re-hydrates. Another thing I learned was that you could evaporate the water in a compound to make it an anhydrous compound. Lastly that the hydrate is chemically bound to the Copper (II) Sulfate, but it can be separated with…

Method: Briefly, 5 grams of copper (II) sulfate was placed in a test tube. Filter paper was placed on top of that, 10 grams of salt were then added, and then more filter paper was added. An iron nail was placed faced down on top of that last filter paper and then the test tube was filled with enough water to cover up the nail. Last, the test tube was observed for the next three days.…
