Cooperative A cooperative (also co-operative; often referred to as a co-op) is a business organization owned and operated by a group of individuals for their mutual benefit. In the United States, the first formal cooperative business is assumed to have been established in 1752, almost a quarter-century before the Declaration of Independence was signed. This cooperative, a mutual insurance company called the Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire, was organized by

The first cooperative was organized in 1844 by a group of workers in Rochdale, England; that same year in Germany, Victor Aime Huber developed some of the early European cooperative theories, and Wilhelm Raiffeisen created the first true credit unions in Germany in 1852 and 1864(United States-NCUA 1). Two methods exist for regimes to deal with ethnic and sectarian challenges in their country: cooption and coercion. The former integrates members of minority groups into the government to prevent or resolve ethnic or sectarian challenges; the latter uses force and manipulation to repress actions by minority groups which could threaten the governing legitimacy of the incumbent regime. Throughout the modern history of the Middle East, regimes have used both methods to quell challenges arising from the…
