Benvolio and Tybalt are two enemies who despise each other. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare there a few people that has opposite personalities. In the play in act I, scene i Benvolio and Tybalt are immediately shown as opposites. This is because a fight starts and Benvolio tries to break it up but then Tybalt enters the stage and forces Benvolio to fight against him. William Shakespeare tries to show the two separate families of the Montagues and the Capulets. William Shakespeare shows that Benvolio is a peaceful person that does not like fighting, his foil is Tybalt who enjoys fighting and absolutely loathes the Montagues. The audience can tell that Benvolio is a peace keeper because he says “I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword, or manage it to part these men with me (I.i.70-71). This means that all Benvolio wants is for the people in the area to stop fighting. Tybalt on the other hand is a fighter, this shows when he says “What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee (I.i.72-74). Tybalt saying this shows that because of his hate of the Montagues he hates peace. It also shows how much he hates peace when he compares it to hell. These two characters are opposite in personality but alike in dignity.

An example of this is when Benvolio says: "We talk here in public haunt of men: Either with draw unto some private place, Or reason coldly of your grievances, Or else depart. Here all eyes gaze on us."� (III, i, 49-52) Benvolio remembers the prince 's words and warns that they should not fight in public. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Benvolio is more civilized than Tybalt. To begin, Benvolio is respectful towards his kin. In a conversation with Montague, Benvolio wishes that “[his] noble uncle…so please [himself], step aside” (Shakespeare 1.1.140-153).
