Cool Hand Luke Character Analysis

In the movie, “Cool Hand Luke,” Luke, the main character, is a special kind of person and really stands out with the situation he is in. The main parts of the movie is him trying to escape from this prison he was evicted to in Florida and forced to become part of a chain gang. Luke has a hard time fitting in with the prison and extremely defiant which is why he tries to escape three times, with no luck. The wardens try their hardest to break him and in the end it doesn’t turn out too good for Luke himself. This movie shows about the cruelty that people had to deal with in the prisons during the time and really shows how Luke became a sense of hope for the prisoners and a hero. Luke is determined to escape after he was locked inside a box to stop him from running after finding out about his mother’s death. Luke makes three attempts in escaping, and in two of them, he fails and is returned to the camp. However, in the third attempt, he is killed and this truly is his real escape, from the camp and restraint of life. With every attempt in escape, Luke manages to gain more respect and give his name more and more power. In the first escape, he manages to get one of the hounds killed from trying to climb through layers of barbed wires. In the second attempt, he actually gets free for awhile, and in his absence manages to send the leader Dragline a magazine of his previous life with him and two women, raising his status even more. The prisoners know of his “successful” escape now being that they got this magazine. In Luke’s final attempt, he was seen as weak and cowardish by the others for how he acted after being captured the second time. Everybody has lost all care for Luke, they lost hope in him and no longer idolize him, the thing they don’t know is his master plan to kiss some ass then escape when nobody is expecting it. This time, he steals a truck and in the escape, Dragline hops on with him and they ride off from the chain gang.
