“If someone listens to [our] music, and it makes them creative, that makes me happier than anything”. These are the words of Marilyn Manson, a controversial musical artist from the ‘90s. His messages and live performances have earned him both praise and great hostility. Marilyn Manson is one of the most important figures of the ‘90s and early 21st century because he artistically exercises his freedom of speech and expression whilst inspiring others to do so as well.
Marilyn Manson was born Brian Hugh Warner on the 5th of January 1969, in Canton, Ohio3. He is the only child of Hugh & Barbara Warner, a furniture salesman & nurse, respectively1. He was raised mainly by his mother because his father was a drinker and possessed a violent temper1. However the two have a good relationship, and Hugh calls his son “Manson” “out of respect for him as an artist”1. His mother was diagnosed with dementia in 20112. It started while he was working as a journalist in Fort Lauderdale (where he interviewed the likes of Trent Reznor and the Red Hot Chili Peppers). Manson met Scott Putesky (better known as Daisy Berkowitz), and the two formed a band. They decided to form stage names using the first names of famous female sex symbols & the last names of serial killers (this was required by every band member until roughly the early 2000’s)1,4. This is when the Marilyn Manson persona was born, however at the time many still called him Brian. He formed his own name from Marilyn Monroe & Charles Manson, because “the two extremes appealed to [him]”2.
