Construction: Recycling and Energy
P4 four key methods used to protect the natural environment from the impact of construction

Minimisation of pollution
Pollution has a marked effect upon the environment as well as on our health and well-being. There are several ways to minimise pollution including: * Fitting fume scrubbers to chimney outputs to remove solids and any pollutant chemicals that would be realised into the air. * Treating water of foul drainage before it is discharged into sea outfalls to reduce the effects on marine environment. * Minimising wastage by recycling construction products such as timber, metal and bricks and therefore reducing pollution dumped into landfill sites. * Using developments in technology such as biofuels and low sulphur fuels to provide cleaner emissions released during combustion in engines.

Reduction in embodied energy
There is a close relationship between the energy we use and global warming. We can therefore try to reduce the amount of energy we use in construction by specifying materials that have lower embodied energy. Natural timber products are excellent examples as they absorb carbon during growth and cost little to convert into a useable construction product. Cement –based products, contain high levels of embedded energy, careful consideration should be given before using these products or alternative products should be sought.
Reduction in energy usage
We need to extend the life of our limited resources. To accomplish this, we need to save energy. This can be achieved through: * Energy saving measures * Renewable energy measures
There are many ways to save energy in a building including switching off appliances on standby, using energy efficient light bulbs, using grade A appliances, and only filling a kettle

with the amount of water needed, however these are just the minor ways to reduce energy usage that can have a big effect if we all contribute.
Renewable energy sources are a rapidly developing

There are many ways to conserve natural resources, all we need to do is look around and find a way to minimize the usage of natural resource that we using everyday. For example, turn off the lights when we leave the house; minimize the waste produced by buying less packaged goods and reusable products, and recycling. These are little things we can do to help, and these does not take much effort to do; however, if everybody does the same, we can still make that difference. In the big picture, we can consider using more renewable natural resources such as hydro-power and solar-power. These energy resources are the best ways to conserve natural resource such as fossil fuel. Fortunately, many energy conservative products have been invented: hybrid or electric cars and energy-efficient home appliances. These are the reflections of people’s concern towards the natural resources depletion. On the whole, we need to start do our share to conserve the energy and resource as part of our responsibility to the natural…

With energy being a scarce resource, people across the world need to look at lifestyle changes to protect the environment for future generations. Anything from driving less to turning off a light in a room can help the cause. Conservation methods take thought, commitment, and changes to everyday lives to make a difference. In order to conserve energy, consumers need to be aware of their daily usage and find ways to cut the usage down. Conservation of energy includes using less gasoline, electricity, and non-renewable resources. It also involves finding and producing alternative energy, recycling and home improvements. Not all methods of energy conservation will negatively impact the daily routines of people. With a little consideration and dedication to reduce energy consumption, everyone can do their part.…

Nonetheless, saving energy not only benefits the planet, but our ‘pockets’ as well. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a simple task like replacing the light bulbs in your home can save up “75% energy of the 10% home energy costs.” Or simply unplugging electronics and appliances when not in use – a task made easier by using multiple-outlet strips, which can turn everything off with the flip of a switch – can save you money. For example, Leaving a computer on all day can cost about “21 cents per day, or about $75 per year” (U.S. Department of energy). Also, according to Goldemberg’s article “Energy for the New Millennium”, 78% of CO2 and 23% of methane is expelled from energy activities which are ultimately major contributors to indoor air pollution, urban air pollution, acidification and global…

Man in his lifetime, uses energy in one form or the other. In fact whatever happens in nature, results, out of the conversion of energy in one form or the other? The blowing of the wind, the formation of the clouds and the flow of water are a few examples that stand testimony to this fact. Of late, erratic and perfunctory usage of energy has resulted in an energy crisis, and there is a need to develop methods of optimal utilization, which will not only ease the crisis but also preserve the environment.…
