Standardized testing has become the focus of modern school reform since the implementation of the No Child Left Behind law in 2002 (Evans 1). The act was designed to hold all public schools to a high standard of education, measured by the results of students’ test scores on statewide standardized tests. Not all students are good test takers, and not all careers require the ability to take traditional tests in order to be successful on the job. A significant number of students nowadays would care much about standardized tests. This is because students feel like they must worry about a test which directly affects their grades and ability to learn. Standardized tests place a heavy weight on students that can lead to stress, take up instruction timing, and students won’t be able to learn anything from them.…
The experience of the English colonies in the 17th and 18th century contributed to an expectation for self-government in the formation of political, religious, economic and social institutions. The House of Burgesses and the Mayflower Compact contributed to the political aspect, mercantilism and the South Atlantic system influenced the economic institutions, the Great Awakening and the Witch Trials supported the religious developments, while Bacon’s rebellion and the Southern Social Hierarchy were instrumental in the region’s social progress.…
There are so many tests, that the Government are focusing on quality. A result to that would be keeping the good tests, and getting rid of the bad. Also another issue is that tests overlap. Some tests take so long to get the results back in, that the kids may be in the other grade already! This paragraph has talked about how most are the Standardized tests are low on quality.…
Standardized testing causes many dilemmas throughout schools. One big reason why we need to fix standardized testing is if there are people that aren’t able to speak fluent in english they will have a hard time. Just because they aren't able to speak english doesn’t mean that they don't know what they are testing them on. These test are not accurate. We have to fix this. There has also been studies that show these test cause ample amount of stress towards students and teachers. We shouldn’t put kids through this.…
Standardized tests have existed in America since 1800s. The tests are ubiquitous attempt to measure students’ performance based on his or her ability to come up with a singular answer to multiple choice questions. A major problem with this is that all students learn differently and their ability to take the standardized test is not a valid representation. The “No Child Left Behind Act” caused a surge in the amount of standardized tests required throughout the nation. The results of these standardized testing showed that America was in the 31st position in the world in the level of education. This is reflected in our school system, which is most likely caused by the misunderstanding of the standardized testing. Standardized testing limits…
Every year, mandated annual exams are administered to students, of all ages, across all 50 states. School districts, school boards and teachers use these scores evaluate student’s academic progress. Separated by state, there are different versions of standardized exams that students are required to take that cover the same basic math, science, and reading skills. Standardized testing is a symptom a disease that lead to a broken education system that is based off the performances of students on a standardized achievement test. These tests are heavily influenced by three causative factors that contribute to students' scores on standardized achievement tests: what's taught in school, an intellectual disability, and the way students learn.…
A large issue with our educational system is standardized testing. Standardized tests are used to measure students academic achievement and gage teaching. While the intentions are good, the tests are flawed and often discriminate against students. Due to the weaknesses, standardized tests are an unreliable source of measuring student performance.…
Standardized testing has been around since the mid-1800s. The purpose of this system is to measure a student’s achievements through high school. This can help a student and schools realize what they are failing in. Also it can show what they are exceeding in as well. There are many reason to consider standardized exams for high school. Key reason include a explanation of why the test is given and beats any other system of grading, the ability to compare between school, and what schools need to focus on. Is providing this test benefited schools districts nationwide?…
The chief problem with U.S. schools apparently isn’t high dropout rates or underqualified teachers but standardized testing. This is the only conclusion that can be drawn from the push by parents and teachers in Buffalo, Philadelphia, Seattle and elsewhere to help students opt out of taking standardized tests.…
Standardized tests are playing a detrimental role in American public schools. Many students who prepare to take a standardized test worry about the strategies other than using what they’ve learned in class to come to a conclusion on an answer. The Standardized tests that are given to students are unethical because they alienate students whose family has a low income and kids who are of ethnicity. They are also unethical because they rely heavily on false data brought in by students test scores. Schools that have high test scores are given more money by the federal government and schools that have low test scores are given little money or even worse, face closing leaving many teachers jobless. Standardized tests should not be heavily relied…
Since NCLB in 2002 saw a large rise in the use of standardized testing America’s PISA ranking actually fell from 18th in math to 31st, science and reading also fell similarly(Walker). Sadly America is raising a very unintelligent generation, who is so worried about learning how to take tests well that they forget to actually learn. We can’t really trust these large testing companies to gauge our education system’s effectiveness when they themselves have repeatedly had major issues with faulty scores on tests. Legislators from across the country should come together to not only save our country money, but to protect this country’s future, the next generation’s…
Schools across the United States are forced to give their students standardized tests. Standardized tests are multiple choice tests based on a list of state standards that a teacher is required to teach. The state makes schools give these tests to measure student achievement. In most schools, these tests go toward a big percentage of a student’s grade and in some cases determine whether the student will pass or fail a class. One can argue that standardized tests are useful; however, more people would argue that the tests are unfair and ineffective. Even though standardized tests are said to be useful in measuring student achievement, they should not be given because each student learns differently, they affect how much students will learn, they are harmful to student confidence, and some students are not good test takers.…
Standardized testing is good in theory but in reality it is causing many problems. The…
Standardized testing is something you're bound to come across in public schools as soon as first grade. I remember taking test after test as a public school student, and I can't really say I ever got anything out of it. These tests are putting so much pressure on teachers and students a like. A bunch of old men sitting around a table who've never even stepped foot in my school can make a test and say that it evaluates what students have learned as a whole. The problem with standardized testing, its just that, its standardized. Humans strive by working with their peers, giving them the chance to directly feed off of what others are thinking. However this is being pushed aside by the hustle and bustle of teaching a multiple choice test. Standardized testing is being over used and abused. How we are testing, who we are testing, why we are testing. We need to evaluate if its really worth all the money and trouble in the end. According to the teachers on the receiving end these tests seem to be doing more harm than help. Teachers feel they are just teaching a multiple choice test now to assure that their students do well. Testing also takes money, resulting in many districts cutting programs such as arts. Standardized testing is also a money making business, someone out there needs to sell these tests to your school district so they can take a pay check home. Most teachers have a negative attitude about testing because it bring more heartache than help. This needs to be evaluated to assure that we are getting some positive useful information out of our tests.…
“On your desk you should only have your chromebook, a piece of scrap paper and a pencil. You will have 90 minutes to complete this test. You may begin.” This is an example of what students all over the country hear before they take mandatory standardized test. Standardized testing has been in the United States for about 150 years, but the tests have grown in use in the 21st century. Students of grades 3-12 take standardized tests each year to compare the students to each other, and to evaluate teaching. These tests have both pros and cons, which causes adults and students to have mixed views about them.…
