Connell's Short Story 'The Most Dangerous Game'
The Most Dangerous Game
Analyzing Conflict

I find that the most important part of this story is how the plot moves along so quickly. It also manages to describe successfully each conflict or major part of the story. The key element of the plot is when Zaroff and Rainsford play the game. The main conflict would be external which is man verses man, or Zaroff verses Rainsford. There are three major conflicts of man that can be found in Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game." In the rest of this short essay I will utilize the elements of compositions and also identify and explain the three conflicts of man found in this story. The first conflict of man found in "The Most Dangerous Game" is when man verses nature. An example provided from the story would be when Rainsford falls off the boat and then swims to the Island. When he falls into the water the speeding yacht slaps water on to his face and he gags and struggles to get to the surface. When he does reach the surface the boat is long gone and left him behind, he then starts swimming to the nearby island. Rainsford heard pistol shots but couldn't figure which animal it was, so he went into the dense

An example supplied by the story would be when Rainsford meets Zaroff and plays his game. Rainsford is searching through the jungle for the shot he heard. He then comes across a mansion, when he goes in, there is a man standing pointing a large revolver dead at his heart. Rainsford then speaks up and says, "I'm no robber. I fell off a yacht. My name is Sanger Rainsford of New York City." The persons name is General Zaroff and then introduces himself to Rainsford. When they are done, Zaroff challenges Rainsford to a game of hunting and if Rainsford wins Zaroff would cheerfully acknowledge himself defeated. If Rainsford loses he would be enslaved in his castle; Rainsford accepts his challenge and Zaroff will start hunting at

In the first page of "The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell" the story starts out on a yacht going to Rio to hunt jaguars in the early 1900's. It was pitch black and a particularly humid night. The mood is anxious but hearty, and relaxed. So far, there are two characters, Whitney and Rainford. They are two big-game hunters traveling across the sea to hunt…

When Rainsford first gets to Zaroff’s mansion and Ivan points the gun at Rainsford, when Zaroff hunts Rainsford, and for all the other men that Zaroff had hunted on his island. The significance of conflict is that Rainsford has no other choice, other than being whipped by the brutal force of Ivan, than to be hunted by the sick minded General Zaroff. Whose love for hunting is so extreme he hunts men. Another element I will add to Cornell’s work is key, suspense. Suspense grabs viewer’s attention, and at times makes the audience predictable, tense, and even excited. Suspense will be added to “The Most Dangerous Game” starting when Rainsford goes to Zaroff’s mansion. In the story Rainsford refuses to go into Zaroff’s library, but in the motion picture he will. This scene will be terrifying and full of suspense as Rainsford is lured in and is forced to see all the severed human heads that were once Zaroff’s hunt. This key element will also happen when Rainsford is sent out to hide from Zaroff. Towards the end of the hunt, when Rainsford last trap gets set off and…

“Serving doesn't mean staying alive… it means living to your potential.” These words by Antoinette explain that man will do anything to survive. Doing everything necessary to survive is the main theme of “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. The main character in the short story, Rainsford, a guy who gets stuck on Trap Island, has to defeat General Zaroff and his game. This incident causes him to kill Ivan, the servant, and General Zaroff. However, it is his desire to do anything that motivates him to survive and defeat Zaroff's game. First, his goal is to simply do anything to survive. Consequently, Rainsford gets closer to winning and kills General Zaroff at the end of the short story. Therefore, Rainsfords motivation is to win the game, and do anything to survive. The author, Richard Connell, shows that man will do literally everything to stay alive.…

The theme in “The Most Dangerous Game” is obvious. It is good vs. evil, because Rainsford, which is apparently the good guy in this action/ adventure stories, because he immediately disapproves of the idea of hunting humans. On the other hand General Zaroff, who is the demented bad guy, thinks that Rainsfords is ludicrous, because he denies Zaroff offer to go hunting with him when he finds out what the “animal” is that they are hunting. For instance on pg. 15 Rainsford says “Hunting? Good god, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” this quote shows its good “Rainsford vs. evil “Zaroff”. In the “Child by Tiger” the theme is not as clear as “The Most Dangerous Game”, even though the author spends more time exploring its theme. From what I inferred the theme is that good and evil exist in everyday life, in what form it may bring. For example Dick was a deeply religious man, and nobody would ever think that he would do something like that, but his evil was shown by his actions. Not only did he show his evil, but Randy and the possess had shown their evil as well.…

The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell, is an original nonfiction story about two hunters who take themselves into the Amazon to hunt down animals. Rainsford, one of the main hunters, ends up finding himself on a mysterious island after an accident occurs. Comparing to the film, the characters throughout the scenes differentiate in many ways. Although, the short story itself is entertaining. The changes such as the shipwreck, a love interest, and character development that the director produces a much more dramatic plot, placing the audience on the edge of their seats.…

It is commonly believed that if you are in a position of power and authority you will always remain so. In his fictional short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell’s characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff, had the same opinion. Like many individuals, neither men ever expected to be placed in a position of weakness. The deadly conflict that led to both Rainsford and Zaroff hunting and being hunted developed the theme, “strength and power are temporary,” because two once powerful men suddenly fell.…

A boat on the Caribbean Sea is heading to Rio, and a sailor aboard, named Rainsford, falls over the railing into the black waters after hearing gunshots, and swims towards an island with dense jungle and the welcoming General. One example of conflict in the story is when Rainsford hears gun shots fired out in the dark night. This begins the conflict because it is when Rainsford falls out of the boat into the ocean. Zaroff celebrates, "I drink to a foeman worthy of my steel—at last" (Connell 68). General Zaroff is intrigued now that he will be hunting Rainsford, a man with equal wits and skill, in his game. When the knife slingshot set by Rainsford fails to hit the target of Zaroff in the jungle it creates suspense. This means that Rainsford's weapon did not kill his most dangerous enemy and he will have to keep fighting through this game. Richard Connell used conflict to create suspense in "The Most Dangerous Game" to win the reader's attention from the beginning, and go on a frightful journey with Rainsford through the…

Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous explains multiple theories, such as nature versus nurture, and survival of the fittest. This short story also seems to have an underlying theme of Social Darwinism (Of Two Classes). Throughout the entirety of the short story, Connell shows a character change of a main character, Rainsford, who is at a constant battle with General Zaroff, the antagonist. This character change shows the importance of the mindset of characters, and how it can be applied to everyday life.…
