Conformity or Consequences

After reading the story about a fifteen year old, Caucasian girl named Sarah, we find out that she is a sophomore in high school and lives in an affluent part of town with her parents.
Sarah, like most teens that still live at home with parents have a certain time to be in the house every night. This is called a curfew. Most teens Sarah’s age despise any kind of rules their parents set forth, especially a curfew. In the beginning Sarah obeyed all of the rules of the house that her parents set forth. In doing so she was a good girl that also did well in school. Sarah was excited about being a sophomore. She met new people and made new friends in her high school classes. Some of the factors that contributed towards Sarah’s attitude regarding her curfew was before she met her new friends. When her parents first set the rules of the house, Sarah did not have a problem with the curfew. She did what she was supposed to do according to her parents and did not give them any problems. Soon, she met up with her friends that may or may have not been good influences on her. She thought it was great that her friends were so popular and wondered what that would be like from time to time, and soon the curfew did not mean as much. Sarah conformed to her friends’ beliefs by believing herself. Her friends believed they have always had fun at these parties and she wanted to know that feeling. She never broke her parents’ rules, let alone a curfew. She took the rules she knew her parents had laid down for her and broke them because she wanted to feel the same excitement and feelings her friends were feeling. She had never really did fit in with a crowd until now. She was smart, pretty, and somewhat rich like most of the others in her class. Sarah’s friends kept assuring her she would have a good time if she would only go to this party. Indecisive about what

“I’m antisocial, they say. I don’t mix. It’s so strange. I’m very social indeed. It all depends on what you mean by social doesn’t it?..” Clarisse said this as an answer to why she wasn’t in school. They consider her antisocial for wanting to conversate on more than trivial information like the weather and what’s on the walls. For a teenager, life is about the choices people make. Teenagers judge others for who they choose to hang out with, what decisions they make, and how they treat others. At the same time, the actions of others can also alter someone’s life. How people treat someone, what they say to them, and their other non-verbal communication can affect someone’s overall personality and ultimately their current identity. In the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, this situation plays out with the main character, Melinda. She becomes an outcast and is ridiculed by her friends due to her 911 call over the summer during a party. Her friends and others believe that she called the police for no reason, and that she only was trying to end or ruin the party. However,…

Clarisse, who is a pariah, gives up a “normal” life in order to be herself and live freely outside the society. She decides that it is worth it to not have friends in order to express herself the way she wants: “”I’m antisocial they say. I don’t mix. It’s so strange… I haven’t any friends. That’s supposed to prove I’m abnormal’” (26-27). Because she expresses herself in a way that doesn’t conform with the society, she is ostracized by children her own age. This idea of giving friends up to be herself agrees with Bernadette Devlin’s stance because of the sacrifices that she has to make. By not conforming with the society, she is scene as a rebel threat by the people as well as the government. Because the government sees her as a threat, she is killed: “‘Oh no! You weren’t fooled by that little idiot’s [Clarisse's] routine… Flowers, butterflies, leaves, sunsets, oh,hell! It’s all in her file… what good did she ever…

Humans are often hindered by society's expectations to the point where reaching our creative potential is nearly impossible. Conforming to society does not prove anything about character, and in Emersons words “Your conformity explains nothing. Act singly, and what you have already done singly will justify you now” (Emerson). Conforming to a group leaves people mimicking one another. Acting singly will take a person farther in society than just going along with the crowd. When big figures are present a person's inner voice stops contributing because others are doing the talking. Questioning the influential and powerful people may cause a disturbance in the status quo, but elevating ones voice to a higher level stands out and is necessary…
