Conflicted About Lying

If your life was in danger, and one lie could save your life, would you want the lie to be told? Lies are a big issue and one lie that is told can change someone and their views on you you in a quick time could save an individual from harm. I believe that lying is hardly justified unless it brings harm to an individual. Lying is not only just justified, but it is also considered a “moral duty” to protect someone from harm. In paragraph ten of “Its the Truth: Americans Conflicted About Lying,” by NBC News, they state that “Not only is lying justified, it is sometimes a moral duty to protect, says Cohen. An obvious example is when you're lying to protect someone from serious harm. But much less extreme cases often call for lies.” What I believe NBC News is trying to convey through the thoughts of Randy Cohen is that there is an appropriate time to lie, and that is when an individual is in harm. Some people believe a lie is not a lie anymore if they just manipulate the truth, even though that information would not be the whole truth anymore. An example of this is Anne Frank. In paragraph eight of “Its the Truth: Americans Conflicted About Lying,” by NBC News, they state that, “german philosopher Immanuel Kant, who believed all lying was bad - every single lie, event one that could save someone's life.” Through this claim, Kant argues that no lies are justified no matter what the circumstance is. In my opinion, this argument is disagreeable because it has a very selfish point of view considering he wouldn't tell even one lie to protect someone from danger or even save their life.
