“Cross it”, “Ay Guey”, and “Cuatro Nalgas”. Each of these jargons and slangs are created to form a dialect I have attained from diverse situations presented to me. They each have a specific meaning to a certain area in my life. They all come to form a dialect which is specific to me and only me known as Idiolect. Idiolect is not a language of idiots, rather the language pertaining to an individual. All people have their own dialects that are unique to them derived from various areas of life. Many people’s individual characters change when they are at work, depending on the type of work at hand. For instance, working in construction is a completely different aspect than working at a restaurant, coming from someone who took on both jobs. In construction, you tend to become more informal with your language, you speak more curse words, and feel more of a freedom to say what you feel. “Ay Guey,” a slang word which means ‘Oh Man”, is a typical expression said by workers who are mainly Hispanics. This term in English is not expressed as furiously to someone or something as it is in Spanish. Additionally, it can reflexively spew out of your mouth when you hurt yourself. Usually, when I got to work I use a drill to screw in screws and occasionally, I would harm my hand. As my hand is experiencing pain my immediate reaction is to yell out “Ay Guey”. In a restaurant, however, your dialect changes to more of a formal language as you are talking with customers and want to receive the best tip you can. In this environment, cursing and informal language directed to customers is unlikely to occur. You spend most of your time growing up with your family, and those little phrases you come up with or things you babbled as a baby stick on with the family. They then become familiarized to you and your family. They can also be phrases made by you or by others. In my family for example “Cuatro Nalgas” is used at times to call my younger brother, and when we say it, he knows we are referring to him. Guessing “Cuatro” was four is easy, but then the second word may not be as simple. In order to get my brother's attention, we yell, “Four butts”. We do this because it adds humor in our family and makes him a bit mad at times. It all came from my dad, who one day while at the beach said my brothers rolls of fat on the hips made it look like he had a total of four butts. Hearing this made us burst in laughter but created a term that stuck on since then. Despite causing such laughter among us and anger in him it cannot be used always. Our dad allows us to use the word but with people who would not understand, since it is not part of their idiolect and people that are close with our family. However, using it with people who are unknown to us is prohibited since they may understand the term and take it out of context. Moreover, the more often we used it, the more accustomed we have become of it. Such experiences that go on in families can usually strengthen bonds within them and form a new idiolect bit
