The Comparison of Beowulf and the Gladiator
The Comparison of Beowulf and The Gladiator

In every story or fairy tale it is always issues of good and evil that intensify and escalate conflict. In the Gladiator and in the epic poem Beowulf, there were many similarities that occurred. For instance Maximus and Beowulf were well respected, loyal, and they fought for what they believed in. In both stories the good and evil manifested through the themes of Man vs. Man, and Man vs. Fate and Destiny.

The characteristics of good is defined as one being positive in nature, which characterizes Beowulf and Maximus. They were very positive people and helpful to others. On the other hand the characteristics of evil is defined as the act of being wicked, which resembled the characteristics of Grendel and Commodus. Grendel and Commodus both were wretched.

Beowulf was a powerful warrior who fought Grendel, as to Maximus was a mighty warrior who battled Commodus. Grendel was jealous of the people in Herot Hall, because he had no one to associate with. He lived dark and gloomy. So to make others miserable, he attacked them viciously. This is when Beowulf takes over and battles him in Herot Hall one on one. Beowulf killed Grendel by pulling his arm from his socket, which made him bleed to death. However Maximus most important dual was with Commodus. Commodus was jealous of Maximus because Marcus Aurelis chose Maximus as his heir. He did everything in his power to have Maximus killed, but Maximus over came many of Commodus challenges. This is when the battle begins. Commodus cut Maximus so he won't be as powerful. Even though this slowed his energy down, he still managed to kill Commodus.

At the end of both stories Beowulf and Maximus dies. They both fought for their people. Beowulf fought to save King Hrothgar and his men, while Maximus fault for Rome. It was Beowulf's destiny to make sure that his people were safe, and it was Maximus destiny to free the slaves. They were both destined to go to heaven.

The first major similarity between these battles is that Beowulf for the most part he fights alone. During the first battle Beowulf fights against not only Grendal, but also against his men which shows how good of a fighter Beowulf because he was able to defeat them even though he was outnumbered. In his second battle, when fighting against Grendal’s mother he goes down to the bottom of the lake without his men to battle against her. During the third battle, his men desert him during the intense fight so Beowulf is left alone to fight his most challenging battle yet. In the end Beowulf is unable to defeat the dragon so he was left to lose alone.…

Today heroes consist of superman, batman, Tom Cruises and Michael Jordans who are very different from Beowulf's time. Back then, heroes were kings and warriors who basically protected their people and country. The warriors were strong men who could physically make or prevent an attack in order to protect their country. The roles of the heroes have changed today, though people still aspire to be like them. Heroes today, just as in Beowulf's time, are made immortal by the written word. While in our day heroes do not literally fight Grendels or dragons, they figuratively fight these battles everyday. Beowulf fought Grendel for his own glory and it seems, more importantly, to make the lives…

These two pieces of literature are different from one another but they also have some of the very same elements that make them interesting. The first thing is that both Beowulf and Frodo are both heroes even though they act very different and their stories are different. The next thing is the two heroes both go on a journey. They both have someone they can depend on. For Beowulf this would be Wiglaf who helps him defeat the dragon even though Beowulf killed it. For Frodo his friend Sam is the one he can deepened on. Sam tried to kept Frodo from falling into temptation of the ring, he saved Frodo from the Orcs, and he helped carry Frodo up the mountain. The next thing that these two stories have and these two heroes have in common are the legacies and stories that…

When talking about renowned stories and strong characters in literature, there are two names that come up every time, A Tale of Two Cities and Beowulf. Both of these stories can be compared in many ways and in many ways they are extremely different with few similarities. There are three similarities that I want to specifically discuss more about: the protagonists’ characteristics, how they change, and how they end their lives with meaning.…

Beowulf was written by an unknown Anglo Saxon poet from 700 A.D. and has been passed on ever since then. The story has been said to have taken place in 500 A.D. It is about a Kingdom called Denmark ruled by King Hrothgar whom is said to be a good ruler. The kingdom has been cursed for hundreds of years by a monster named Grendel. Every time the people of Denmark gathered in the hall of the kingdom Grendel would hear the music of god and it would hurt his ears because he was a Son of Cain. Then one day Beowulf King of Geats, comes to the Danish Shore and without fear stands up to guard and boasts about himself and explains to the guard that he is there to defeat the monster that has cursed the land. There are two different stories to the tale…

Beowulf’s external conflicts are part of what creates his internal conflict. Beowulf must defeat the monster Grendel whom had been killing men in the middle of the night and taking their bodies. “Beowulf heard how Grendel was filling nights with horror so he commanded a boat so he could go see king Hrothgar.” (Beowulf 23) He had fought and killed monsters before, but none were on the scale of Grendel. He fought Grendel with no weapons leaving only his hands to kill the monster. “Had he met a man whose hands were harder….but nothing could take his talons and himself from that tight grip. Grendel’s one thought was to run from Beowulf, flee back to his marsh and hide there.” (Beowulf 33) Grendel had never been challenged this way before, causing Beowulf’s tactic to pay off. “The sounds changed, the Danes started in new terror, cowering in their beds as the terrible screams of the Almighty’s enemy sang in the darkness, the horrible shreaks of pain and defeat, the tears torn out of Grendel’s taut throat, hell’s captive caught in the arms of him who of all the men on earth was the strongest.” (Beowulf 33-34) Beowulf killed the mighty monster creating an internal battle.…

The similarities and differences between how heroism is portrayed in the Gladiator and in the Beowulf, is showcased between the time differences in the texts. Beowulf comes from a line of kings and has the strength of 30 men, In the Gladiator, Maximus is a commander of the Roman army with a family waiting for him at home to return. A hero must possess key qualities, such as, Loyalty, Leadership, Courage, Honour/Decorum in order to be victorious; which both characters have. Beowulf’s time and his acts of heroism is before the Gladiator’s time therefore making it more difficult to be a hero. Beowulf vowing to kill Grendel or to die trying, is like when Maximus swore that he would kill Commodus for hanging and burning his family or die trying.…

    Achilles Vs Beowulf

One major contrast between the two were the situations they were in. Beowulf had fought alone at most times against one monster with a few of his army men behind him. Achilles was in a war and did have some one on one combat, but ultimately killed a lot more than Beowulf had. Beowulf also got a great prize after defeating the demons, which was becoming King. Achilles will only have his name remembered forever, yet this is still an honor. Another big difference is their attitudes; Achilles was selfish at times and would only fight for what he believed in and only himself, where Beowulf crossed lands to help a king and not only himself.…

Part A- Beowulf like all epic hero’s is strong loyal and brave. These characteristic are what define Beowulf, and instill fear is his enemies. He boasts about “(driving) / five great giants into chains” (248-249) and “In the blackness of night, hunting monsters” (251). Beowulf protects his followers and king, and is proud of his accomplishments. He strives for greatness, his words are arrogant but his actions shine through his overbearing pride and give him the capability to be heroic. (Part B) Beowulf is an epic hero; he takes great pride in his actions, unlike Grendel who feels jealous of humans which causes him to be spiteful towards them: “ Grendel snatched at the first Geat / He came to (and) Ripped him apart” (313-314). Grendel’s pride lays in the fear he instills on humans, without pride Grendel would be a monster with no motive to kill. Furthermore, Beowulf’s pride stems…
