Comparing My Life With Kidney Disease
Life for me
Once upon a time I had came across a kidney disease when I was 2 years old called FSGS. It is where your kidney starts to spill a lot of protien in your urine and it is very bad on your kidney, so I have this and I have to drink a lot of water each day.
My grandpa on the other hand is the hero on this end because he gave me his kidney when I was so little. He said “I will donate my kidney to my grandson Bradly adams.”
And from this point on I thought of my grandpa as my hero ever since. Well for now on it is like a train constantly hitting me and telling me to get blood work. Well for those who don't know blood work is a type of thing where you go in and get your blood drawn every other month and it seems to much, but blood work is for testing they put in in tubes and it collects your blood type, and it figures out what is wrong with your body. The nurses there always say that “you're tough as nails son.” I can see where they are coming from.

My dad has always been my hero because of his amazing ability to control his emotions. I’ve never seen my dad fly off the handle when frustrated by an ignorant individual or panic in a time of danger or emergency, he lives his life calm, cool and collected, he’s the rock that holds my family down in the fierce winds of emotional hurricanes. There has only been one time in my entire life that I’ve seen a tear fall from my father’s eye, it was the day that he got a…

A hero that we have learned about that has really grasped my attention this year is a man that people call “Guardian of the Bridge.” This man has really spoken to me in a way that no other person has. He is the true definition of selflessness and a great example of a true hero. This man is like every other human being except there is just one thing different about him; he gives without wanting anything in return. This man was named the “Guardian of the Bridge” because when people felt like they were done with life and were ready to give up, this man rushed to their side and talked to them for hours on end. He watched over these people and made sure he did whatever it would take to save these peoples precious and valuable lives. This man is an inspiration to me and many other people because of his dedication that he took to talk to people and help them think twice about…

I had asked my mom, “Why did God choose me to have seizures?” My mom said “God has given you this challenge because he knows that you are strong, you will overcome this and you are going to help change lives for other people battling epilepsy and show them that life does not have to stop”. At that time, I had two choices. I could give up and allow Epilepsy to take over or I could make the decision to not let Epilepsy win and fight it until the end. I was not going to allow this to defeat me or change my dreams of being a baseball player.…

For as long as can remember I have had problems with my knee. It all started back in middle school, when we were playing basketball in our math class. My teacher at the time, Mr. Siem, would play with us. On this particular day, we were on opposing teams and he was bringing down the ball. When I went to defend him, he never stopped and he ran into me. His knee landed on mine with all of his weight. I knew right away that something was wrong.…

I was listening to Party in the U.S.A by Miley Cyrus, a weird and strong effort to look at the bright side of this new life; it worked because the song always makes me want to dance and that day wasn’t an exception. I remember coming out of the plane and thinking “God, it smells so good. It smells like someone just cleaned everything.” Then I saw a cleaning lady and I knew I was right. When we walked out of the airport, I noticed it was a cloudy day but it was really hot, it’s one of those moments where you don’t know if you should take your jacket off or not. My cousin picked us up and her excitement was contagious, for the first time in that day, I smiled. She took us to Fuddruckers, we ate and talked a lot, it brought many memories from when my mom, my sister, and I used to come to Miami to visit and we would eat there sometimes. I liked it there because of all the photos of artist that I like, so that cheered me up too. That night, at my uncle’s house, before going to sleep my mom said “Thank you God, because we’re okay.” And I took her hand and said “Amen.” While she was sleeping, I prayed all night until I fell asleep. I prayed for my sister, I prayed for my mom, I prayed for my dad, I prayed for my friends, and I prayed that my life here was good. God only knows how much I prayed for my life to be good…

This year I have gone through the toughest times in my life. In December I started getting really painful headaches again, a problem I’ve dealt with for a while but never this bad. During this time my headaches were so awful, I couldn’t go to school, I couldn’t see my friends, I couldn’t run, it hurt to walk, it felt like my world was crumbling. I felt as though this health problem stole everything I loved. Being was stuck at home incapable of doing anything, was extremely painful, it hurt knowing I couldn't do 95% of the things I loved, I had to stop working, switch to virtual school, and stop playing sports.…

They visited me, provided entertainment and thus distracted me from hospital surroundings. I can remember seeing my mom curled up on the floor moaning in pain but refusing help. None of us knew what to do or how to help. Eventually, we knew that something had to be done. She finally agreed to get some help and learned that she had developed chronic kidney disease. In this case my mom developed chronic kidney disease through genes passed down to her, and in fact her uncle had suffered from chronic kidney disease as well. Chronic kidney disease is a slowly progressive disease, and by the time my mom had found out she was in need of a kidney transplant. My mom was put on the list for a transplant and given a pager. All we had to do now was wait for a donor. Simple right? This eventually turned into three years of dialysis, blood testing,…

Cancer. I remember the first time I heard that word from my doctor. I had just been diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a fancy name for bone cancer. My doctor was in the process of telling me how they were going to treat me and how everything was going to be okay. However, I could only focus on that one word, cancer. It’s a hard word for an ambitious 15 year old to swallow. Especially one who was just about to begin their sophomore year of high school. There are a lot of challenges that come with cancer and I wasn’t able to overcome all of them. However, through my battle with cancer I was prepared for anything that life threw my way.…

At the young age of two I was diagnosed with a disease that did not have a cure. Luckily, I was spared the memory of being diagnosed, but I often wonder what it would be like if I had been diagnosed later in life. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s ability to manufacture a hormone called insulin. I have to prick my finger four times a day to get a blood sample to test my blood sugar, which wasn’t easy as a toddler at first, but eventually I became used to it. From the time I was two till when I was five, I had already taken 3,500 insulin shots. On the bright side I no longer have a fear of needles. Fortunately for me, technology became more advanced, and they invented something that would make my life as a diabetic much easier to handle. They invented the insulin pump. The first insulin pump I had looked like an pager that would clip onto the side of my short's, except it had a long clear tube running from it to an injection site on my hip.…
