This video about Bruce/Brenda Reimer's story and Dr. Money was very interesting and sad. Originally, the traditional view of gender identity is a nature stance. It is stating basically that boys and girls are already born with innate features that make them specifically a boy or a girl. On the other hand, Dr. Money believed that boys and girls are born blank. That the environment, society or culture are the catalysts that how a girl and boys should behave. He believes the way a child is reared may influence the child's identity. He was more on the nurture scale versus…
After reading Being 'Masculine of Center' While Black by Dani McClain i have come to the conclusion that the concept of identity in the digital age isn't your choice. The writer, Dani, is a African American who identifies as a Masculine of center, however she feels powerless to claim that title due to how heavy racial profiling still is today and the LGBTQ community is still looked down upon. Dani has experience being called racial slurs and sexist slurs solely based on her looks and how she feels comfortable to live her life. Her race and gender are so important in the 21 century. Having to experience such horrible conditions because she is living the way she wants to to should not be acceptable. I feel it is personally accepted in any community…
According to Tannen “If a woman takes her husband's name, she announces to the world that she is married and has traditional values. To some it will indicate that she is less herself, more identified by her husband's identity (Tannen 206). In this case the anecdote links the connection between personal titles and the judgement of women. When looking at the personal title and name of a woman they are subject to analysis towards their place in society and worth as a person. Contrastingly a man’s is a default and is regarded as the same meaning without taking into account their social standing. Additionally, the anecdote assists the audience in realizing that women have experience as the marked gender in other cases besides appearance. Proponents of this argument may claim that the anecdotes Tanner employs serve to show that in instances where one group appears as the minority is when they are subjected to be marked. While biology is a female oriented subject due to their importance in different animal kingdoms one way in which males experience marking is “while two X chromosomes make a female, two Y chromosomes make nothing. Like the linguistic markers s, es or ess, the Y chromosome doesn't "mean" anything unless it is attached to a root form -- an X chromosome(Tannen 206). It is important to note that the fact men are the biologically marked group highlights the unjust in women’s marking. The scientific example expresses how especially unfair society is towards women when their biological makeup is considered the default. This account, in addition to the previously managed anecdotes all give the reader an understanding how every choice a woman makes is subject to examination which is supports social differences between men and…
In King’s “I Have a dream” and Staples “Black People in Public Space” there are few changes evident in the assumptions the authors make about their audience's attitude, about race in general, and about racism based upon racial climate at the time. King writes about the racial climate at the time when he said, “When will you be satisfied? We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as a negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in the New York believes he has nothing for which to vote” (509). Staples also writes about the racial climate. “Then there were the standard unpleasantries with policemen, doormen, bouncers, cab drivers, and others whose…
On the 27th of May 1939 the St.Louis was refused entrance to Havana after a 14 day long journey. It had left its port two weeks earlier in Hamburg on the 13 of May. It was carrying 937 passengers(Holocaust memorial). Most of the passengers were Jewish German citizens but there was also some Europeans, Spanish and Cubans aboard the ship(Historica Canada). Most of these were refugees searching for a new home where they would be safe from Hitler.…
When we have been exposed to a specific role of gender all our lives, it is difficult to accept different scenarios. A different scenario would be when society would not be able to accept a powerful and non-emotional woman, or a very sensitive man. An example of this is children are educated of what roles a man and female play. In Disney movies, such as Aladdin, children are shown roles of women and men. A young girl is given to a man just to own more land. It shows society what role a man has over a woman. Anna Quindlen author of a short essay “Gay” and Gillianne N. Duncan author of “Why Do We Hate Our Bodies?” are examples of how the norms of society shape and make people judge others only because they are different. In “Gay,” Quindlen tells a story about her friend’s friend, about how a family would rather lie about the sexual orientation of their dead son, than tell the truth and be judged…
In the words of Jeffery , a third-one year old man “Sometimes I just want to be a person.I don’t want to be a gender, one way or another…I want to do what I want to do.And I want to doit how I want to.and with who I want to do it .and not have to worry that men don’t do this and men don’t do that.Women dnt this and women don’t do that…I don’t like that we as a society judge people based on what we assume they have under there clothing.”(Davis 97).For jefferyits simple he judt wants to live his life with no problems, with no socital monsters judging him.jeffery is a transsexual man and he feel it…
Dr. money believed that during the first two years of a child’s life that the child was natural and that it was not just your biology that decided your gender identity but also your upbringing. So these Reimer case was just the perfect to test his theory and so the Reamers’ did as the doctor in instructed and dressed him as a girl and raised him as a girl and they changed his name to Brenda. He told them they were to never tell Brenda she was born a boy or it would never work. They would visit every two years to visit and record the results. The first few years seem to be ok, Brenda seemed to be wanting girl things and everything seem to be working as dr. money said they would. At the age two her testicles were removed. And it wasn’t until Brenda was 7 years old when her mother had doubts about the progress of the gender issue. As Brenda got older she felt like she was crazy for feeling like a boy and wanting to play boy games and feeling like an outcast. As she grew older she started looking more masculine and the doctor pushed for…
The key concept of Raymond’s argument is that whatever sex you are born as, is your true sex. If you are born a man, you are and always will be a man, and if you are born a woman, you are and always will be a woman. In her view, “males who undergo sex-reassignment procedures remain deviant men and never become women” (Page 131). This idea of an inability to identify with any gender other than the one you are born with leads Raymond to make other incorrect and hurtful assumptions about transsexual people, especially male-to-female (MTF) transsexuals. Since she…
The creation of gender has contributed to inequality in American society in many ways. The beginning of this inequality began with Hall. Hall was an intersex human being, born with both male and female parts. Hall was brought forth into the General Court of Virginia because Hall dressed as both men and women when beneficial and “people were confused about Hall's sexual identity” (Kerber 35). In order to find out what Hall's identity was, three women; Alice, Dorothy, and Barbara looked over Hall's body. All three of the women decided that Hall was a woman. In the disagreement over Hall's identity, the owner who was a male named John Tyos, declared he was a male. Now starting from an early time period it showed that even though three women examined…

My life is pre-determined by my race and gender. I have felt the pressure to conform to society’s image of a white wealthy male. Being male has given me benefits that many transsexuals have noticed and worked to become accustomed to. In Deborah Rudacille’s piece “Introduction”, Rudacille noted that one person “simply cannot understand why a successful middle-aged man would surrender his cultural power to assume the lower-caste status of a middle-aged woman” (Rudacille XIX). Growing up male already gives me a title and path to what I must become. Early on I was lead to believe I must become the main provider and source of security in my family, and the amount of free will I possess allows me to choose this path for myself.…
Everybody should be allowed to express himself or herself in any gender identity they find most comfortable and best fit. They should be allowed to live an authentic and whole life without being judged. Being in a more accepting environment, such as a workplace would reduce the amount of stress of hiding their identity which would result in an increase in productivity, develop a more genuine relationship with guests for being…
Not fitting into the specific gender roles and characteristics have to be some of the hardest things that some males and females go through. It has been decades since the whole “mothers stay at home” and “fathers work and earn the money” era, but when one expectation ends, others multiply. In today’s culture it is not okay to be a feminine man, and a masculine female, those two things just do not add up in 2016. There are standards men and women must live up to in order to “fit in” and be considered “normal”. It is unfair, to say the least, for the people who will never be able to overcome these qualifications. In this culture there is an ideal body shape, certain BMI to obtain, looks you must live by, and specific ways to act, all of this…
