Comparing Democritus And The Discovery Of The Atomic Model
Democritus was the first scientist to create a model of the atom as well as the first to discover that all matter is made up of indivisible particles called atoms. His belief in atoms was that atoms were small, hard particles that were all made of the same material but were different shapes and sizes. Furthermore he believed that atoms were infinite in shape, in number, always moving and capable if joining together. Unlike Democritus's belief, Aristotle's belief about the atom were completely different. For instance, he disagreed with Democritus's belief and instead believed that there was no smallest part of matter and that different substances were made of earth, fire, air, and water. Also Thomson's theory couldn't explain the atomic spectrum and other properties of the atom. The Gold Foil experiment led to the discovery of the Nuclear Model and the existence of an atomic nucleus and protons. In the experiment, Rutherford directed a narrow beam of alpha particles at a thin piece if gold foil. With the prediction that the positive charges would go through the foil, Rutherford has found that every one and a while, a positive particle that was deflected bounced back because the positive charge hit a central mass of positive and was repelled. The difference between the nuclear model and the Plum Pudding model was that in the nuclear model, the electrons are not scattered evenly in the nucleus but are at great distances in the nucleus also the electrons orbit around the nucleus. In Rutherford's theory, the electrons keep emitting energy when orbiting. And the idea contained flaws because this would eventually causes loss of energy and the atoms would collapsed and it also lacked

    They may differ in their principles and fundamentals but in the end some will agree that only nature is the only form of existence. One philosopher in particular, Democritus, stands out for his belief of the existence of substances. Democritus holds the principle true that the only thing that exists is atom and void. This is seen in the statement made by Democritus, “being exists no more than non-being, because the void exists [no less] than body” (Democritus 25). Democritus principles align with that of Lewis’s opposition to the argument of their being more than nature due to the principles that he puts forth. Democritus explains the varying characteristics to the atoms, such as, indivisible, infinite. Indivisible, but he makes no clear distinction between their being any other kind of existence of nature. Secondly, a major reason that Democritus argument fails to agree with Lewis yet enhances the opposing argument comes from the idea of the collision of particles. To show this he states it as such, “the number of shapes [of atoms] is infinite, since there is no reason why they should be one shape rather than another” (25). This is similar to the argument that Lewis is fight this same argument, he sums it up by saying, “they must, like everything else, be the unintended and meaningless outcome of blind forces” (Lewis 77).
