Ericson does not want to challenge the power structure because she benefits from the system. Instead, she denies its existence in order to escape self-guilt.
Both novels present the reader with power relationships in order to establish a reader-character connection: * Predator- prey * friendships * employee -employer
Due to Lennie’s intellect he is unaware of such relationships and therefore less aware of their boundaries. Lennie’s given power is in the form of strength. Therefore he is product of the ‘Predator –prey’ system. (Mouse-Dog-Curley’s Wife-Lennie) If even the most innocent of creatures (Lennie) have the ability to kill, does this highlight the fact that we all feed off the oppression of the weak? However, through the death of Lennie, the reader realizes that intellect prevails over brute strength as reality is much clearer.

Crooks experiences discrimination in the book Of Mice and Men because he is african american. The first example of discrimination in this book is when Crooks explains to Lennie why a black man is not wanted on the farm when Lennie barges into his bunk: “‘I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink” (Steinbeck 75). This quote shows that Crooks feels left out because of his race-- this makes Crooks feel unwanted and…

The experience of the speaker in Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “We Wear the Mask” is comparable to Crooks experience in chapter 4 of John Steinbach’s Of Mice and Men. The mask being figurative refers to the emotional mask that covers and conceals one emotion which many blacks wore while being segregated because they were afraid of what would happen if they showed their true feelings. Crooks had a similar experience in chapter 4 in Steinbeck’s book in which he backed down from an argument because he was afraid of the consequences that might fall on him because he was black.…

Lennie’s weakness is his inability to control his physical power. Because he didn’t know how to react in tense situations, he panicked and asserted too much force on his victims. His actions, which are later regretted, stirs a resentful and angry hatred directed toward him. After the accident that he created, people like Curley had reason to shoot and hurt him. This indicates that being only physically strong is not enough for one to survive in the harsh realities of our…

John Steinbeck created the character of Crooks in order for him (Crooks) to embody the marginalisation of the black community during the 1930s. Crooks is a minor character, but this does not stop Steinbeck using him to bring attention to the racism of the time and the reality of ‘the American Dream’.…

Of Mice and Men has a very evident foreshadowing event. When Candy’s dog is killed it foreshadows that Lennie will be killed as well. The main similarity between the two deaths is the fact that the deaths are looked upon as mercy killing. The two deaths are both similar and different in many different ways. Lennie’s death came as no surprise because of all of the problems that he had been causing at the ranch. The dog’s death was much less evident; the book described the dog as old, smelly, and unable to see. The dog was killed by Carlson, a total stranger to him. Putting the dog down himself would have made Candy feel less pain because he was strong enough to do it himself. Lennie was killed by George. George was strong enough to do it himself, this showed that he had been planning on killing Lennie and the thought was not just spur of the moment. The killing of the dog in Of Mice and Men was foreshadowed Lennie’s death.…

Of Mice and Men, by Steinbeck. “I feel like an outsider, and I always will feel like one. I’ve always felt that I wasn’t a member of any particular group.” (Anne Rice). This quote imparts to Lennie and Candy because they’re both different and handicapped. Lennie and Candy are nice people who are powerless, dreamers, and social outcasts.…

Lennie, a big simple-minded character, is a highly disadvantaged individual due to poor mental health. As Lennie is one of the predominant characters in ‘Of Mice and Men’, he is perhaps the least dynamic. He experiences no change in developing or growing in mental or practical abilities; the plain figure remains as illustrated at the start of the opening pages in the novel.…

We as humans, take delight in trying to figure out what the people around us are like. We analyze what they do, what they say, what they've done and offer predictions as to what they will do. As we read a novel we do the same, even though a character isn't living, we think and respond to them as if they were an acquaintance. Character analysis is taking a person's actions, thoughts and feelings and critically assessing who they are. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, we see Slim, although not a central character, of great importance to the story. Steinbeck portrays him as a thinker, "His ear heard more than was said to him, and his slow speech had overtones not of thought, but of understanding beyond thought."…

In John Steinbecks classic work “of Mice and Men” never was it more true that the more things change the more they stay the same.In both the written book and the movie Steinbeck creates a world of untarnished disregard for the human condition and the almost acceptance of death as a part of the narritive of life. All of lifes virtues and vices are explored largely through the eyes of lennie, a lug of a man with a soft spot for his buddy george. Where the book and movie take us is largely a matter of creative license and artistic interpretation. Both the movie and the book had parts in them that were both similar, and different. I feel as if the movie puts a face to words and you can express the character easier. The book lets your imagination…

The novel Of Mice and Men has a great variety of themes. During the time Steinbeck wrote this novel, things were totally different and they had an impact on how John Steinbeck wrote. The theme that stands out to me the most is discrimination. In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck demonstrates the cruelty and vast impact of discrimination towards people who are different through the characters Lennie, Crooks, and Curley’s wife.…
