Comparing Act 5 Scene 5 Of William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

Poison Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavory guide. Thou desperate pilot now at once run on the dashing rocks Thy seasick, weary bark. Here’s to my love! (Shakespeare, 5:3:5) These were the last words Romeo Montague spoke before he drank a deadly poison to join his bride, Juliet, dead in the tomb. Romeo made the worst decision of his life that night; to die beside Juliet. There was one complication, Juliet wasn’t truly dead. The messenger that was sent to inform Romeo of this never came to give him the news that Juliet took a potion that would put her in a sleep like death and would wake up after forty-two hours of drinking it. She would escape marrying Paris this way. Then Romeo was to wake her and they would run away to Mantua, living happily ever after. Romeo was unaware that she wasn’t actually dead. Out of grief and depression he went to an apothecary to get his own poison to die along with his wife. Romeo convinced the apothecary to give him the deadly poison. The apothecary accepted and gave Romeo the poison because he was poor and needed the money, not because he wanted to kill Romeo. My poverty, not my will consents. (Shakespeare, 5:1:4)
Before he got into the tomb Paris finds Romeo and thinks he is a criminal and has come to commit awful crimes. They fight and Romeo is victorious when Paris dies in the quarrel and Romeo brings him to the tomb. Romeo then sees Juliet in the tomb and goes to her side. He takes out the poison and drinks it. Romeo dies from the potion only to have Juliet wake up, and find him lifeless beside her. She sees the empty cup of poison and knows what he has done. Juliet is devastated and takes his dagger. She stabs herself and dies next to Romeo. The Friar finds them and tells the Montagues and Capulets. The families make up after they see that their fighting has costed them their children's
