English 8 Nathan Cusson 9/8/16 Period 7
Some people need to laugh when feeling down while others need to show their emotion to others. Two characters that show examples of this are Fred Weasley and Finnick Odair. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K Rowling shows that he is humorous and studious while in Catching Fire Finnick Odair proves that he is athletic and compassionate. Fred Weasley from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has the characteristics of being humorous and studious. Fred displays humorism by playing pranks on people like the headmistress of Hogwarts Dolores Umbridge. Also, upon leaving Hogwarts schools of witchcraft and wizardry, he and his brother George flew on their Cleansweep Fives and launched fireworks that chased down not only the headmistress but other teachers and students. On the other hand, Fred put all jokes aside and when it came down to it became a studious person. Finnick shows his athleticism by carrying fellow tribute Peeta Mellark while Peeta and himself were hurt. Also, before the end of the games, Finnick single handedly carried the wire (which was over 200 pounds) three miles to the lightning tree. However, despite being athletic and a killing machine, he does have a compassionate side to him. For example, instead of leaving when Katniss ran to find her sister who was not there, Finnick ran to help only to realize that Katniss’ sister was being mocked by a jabberjay. Also, to keep people thinking he was still tough, he silently coaxed himself out of sadness when the female tribute from his district died. Finnick Odair from Catching Fire is athletic, but also has a compassionate side to his

Another character that acts on their emotions in literature would be Edmond Dantes, from Alexandre Dumas’ novel, Count of Monte Cristo. In the novel, Edmond is extraordinarily determined on getting revenge against three men that wronged him, and throughout the story, he acts on this determination to get revenge. Unfortunately, once Dantes does find his much sought after vengeance, he finds that having too much determination can be a terrible curse. In the case of both Creon and Edmond, their emotions got the better of them, and they both suffered for it by causing nothing but pain and suffering for others around…

Each person has their different views on African American experience. Most expressed that through poems in the Harlem Renaissance time. Poets such as Arna Bontemps, Countee Cullen and Jean Toomer expressed emotions and they’re point of views in writing. In Jean Toomer’s poem he talks about African American experience speaking about embracing the ideal human race that isn’t concerned with color. Cullen referred poetry as a tool to break down racial barriers for African Americans, although he preferred to use classical form. Bontemps’s work of poetry focuses on the themes of dignity and justice and is influenced by oral traditions and music of African Americans.…

When comparing interviews between Mrs. Meckler and Mrs. Panopoulos, I noticed differences between their respective campuses. For example, LAPC is a public community college whose mission and goal is to provide resources and assist students in finding and achieving their education, career, and personal life goals. Also, increasing student readiness, retention, and academic achievement rates. LAPC strongly values diversity, and thus, is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) which has over 23,000 students enrolled. I learned from Mrs. Meckler that budgeting is noticeably different from a public community college and a private university, regarding, technology, supplies, and number of staff. On the contrary, ASU is a public four-year research university whose mission and goal is to demonstrate leadership in academic excellence and…

The author explains his statement by giving an example of Enid Blyton and RL Stine, who were declared as bad authors, however they are not. Because, there are no bad authors for children, that children like and want to read and seek out, because every child is different. They can find the stories they need to, and they bring themselves to stories. However, then the author contradicts his statement saying that they writers –and especially writers for children have an obligation to their readers not to bore the readers, not to write dull books that turn children away from reading and from books. Thus, it seems that there are such authors that do not perform duty, and they can be declared bad authors. The main weakness of the excerpt is that the…

Everyone has at least one personal flaw that somehow overcomes or defeats them in a certain place in time. In this essay, two characters of completely different fields will be put side by side to compare their own tragic flaws. On one hand, Sophocles’ Oedipus is proud, arrogant and persistent; while on the other hand, Eliot’s Prufrock is self conscious, insecure, and indecisive. While the two characters are complete polar opposites, they also share a devastating similarity: they are paranoid and in fear of their own fate.…

There goes an old saying, “All anyone asks for is a chance to work with pride.” Well, it seems that some people work with almost too much pride. In order to consider the extent to which pride applies to Sophocles' Oedipus The King and Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, consider the following: Oedipus and Willy both take extreme pride in their professions, their pride blinds them from seeing the truth of their situations, and their pride ultimately leads to their own demise/downfall, all of these invoking pity. There are many ways that pride can be attributed to pity just from the situations of these characters. From these extreme examples, we can come to understand how much of a role our emotions factor into our lives, and we too can learn how to better control them.…

An immense desire for personal satisfaction, and extraordinary reputation can often result in a sickly, perverse distortion of reality. In Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, a man well known for his intellect and wisdom, finds himself blind to the truth of his life, and his parentage. William Shakespeare's Hamlet also contains a character that is in search of the truth, which ultimately leads to his own demise, as well as the demise of many around him. Arthur Miller's play, The Death of a Salesman, tells of a tragic character so wrapped up in his delusional world, that reality and illusion fuse, causing an internal explosion that leads to his downfall. Each play enacts the struggle of a man attempting to come to grips with his own, harsh reality and leaving behind his comfortable fantasy world. In the end, no man can escape the truth no matter how hard he may fight it. In choosing the fragility of chimera over the stability of reality, the characters meet their inevitable ruin.…
