When Maynard killed Blackbeard, they hung his head from the bowsprit of the sloop he once commanded. Blackbeard hid in the inlets of Virginia and used it as his protection. He was able to keep it up until Maynard had discovered his hiding spot. In the first passage, "Lt. Maynard and Blackbeard", it discusses more of what happend to Blackbeard. "Lt. Maynard came face-to-face with his famous prey... Maynard shot the pirate captain..." (Lt. Maynard and Blackbeard 2). After the battle finished, Maynard counted 5 shots and 20 cuts on Blackbeard. This lead to Maynard severed Blackbeards head and flaunting it where he once had lead. At the start of the second big chapter, Herbert Clutter’s close friends come to clean up the crime scene because it is their “Christian duty”. The murders of this family have an incredibly huge impact on the town of Holcomb. The town is seen as a quiet place where everyone is friendly, and this murder caused a great deal of horror for the people. As said from the previous chapter, Nancy’s boyfriend is the initial suspect but eventually is ruled out because there was no actual motive for him to commit the crimes. It is said that Dick and Perry go off to Mexico to steer clear of the police, yet are breaking more laws by “hanging paper”. Capote finally reveals more of a backstory on the partners in crime, literally. The novel describes Perry’s troubled past with family issues, abuse, abandonment, suicide, and crime. Perry is a dreamer, whereas his friend Dick is realistic. Perry tells Dick of a reoccurring dream he has (which is obviously relevant for some reason) that includes a tree of diamonds.…

This quote shows how Perry describes his motivation to kill the Clutters. It begins with a rivalrous confrontation with Dick over whether Dick will go through with his promise to “blast hair all over the walls”; this is quickly eclipsed by Perry’s feelings of shame and self-loathing, while reflecting on the indignity of the botched robbery and by association, the indignity of his life as a criminal. He is hardly conscious of slitting Herb Clutter’s throat; the murder comes as a kind of automatic response to the memory of other frustrations and insults he has endured, of which the Clutter household is symbolic.…

Next, this unit taught me that there’s something to be learned from every experience. The story “Star Food” is about a young boy, named Dade, who works at his parent’s grocery store. He spends most of his time daydreaming on the rooftop, avoiding work. His father does not encourage him to miss work, while his mother supports him. In the story we are introduced to a character, a woman, who steals something some bread from the store. Dade watched it all happen but, he didn’t try to stop her. He had stopped people for stealing and confronted, but not this time. Then, it happened again. The same woman came in and she stole some pineapple juice. After she had stolen again Dade began to really think about what he wanted. He said “I tried to discover…

Writers express themselves in different forms, ways and techniques. However, despite the difference in approach, separate writings can be linked together by a general theme of which both author discuss in their stories. Etgar Keret and Dick Gregory are two different persons with different experiences, but their unique stories have a similar subject matter. Dick Gregory in a narrative titled Shame narrates his ordeals about poverty during his childhood, and how his teacher ignoring and shutting down his attempt to impress his childhood crush brought him embarrassment. Etgar Keret on the other hand recounts how his father tried to teach him responsibility by purchasing him a piggy bank, but eventually he ends up developing a liking to this “toy”…

We are first presented with the country side surrounding Dick’s parent’s home through the use of a pre-modified noun phrase, ‘raw country roads’. This suggests to the reader that Dick’s parents live in a very primitive and rural area. We are then presented with a farmer’s wife through the use of exclamatory sentences, ‘Dick Hickock! Don’t talk to me about Dick Hickock!’. This suggests to the reader that she is very angry with Dick. It could also suggest that she could know why Nye has come to question Dick’s parents. This is further reinforced by the use of a minor rhetorical interrogative, ‘Steal?’. This further reinforces that she knows the reason why Nye is there. The farmer’s wife then goes on to describe Dick Hickock’s mum, ‘Heart big as a barn’. The use of the simile reinforces the place in which they live in as it reflects farming and gives a wholesome feel.…
