Commonalities: Video Analysis
Some of the commonalities I identified in the video by these 12-year-old kids were: They were being stereotyped based on their skin color, neighborhood they lived in, and their religion affiliation. There were several points in the video that had an impact on me. The first one was at (1:42), when the little boy discussed what it feel like to be biracial-“He have to prove to his friends that he is black.” I found this comment to be sad. I do not think a child should have to spend their time worrying about these things. They should be focused on their schoolwork and playtime with their friends and family. The second was at (1:11), when the girl stated, “that a restaurant made her family pay in advance, because of their race.” I think people in general can be rude or base their actions on experiences. The last thing was at (2:27) in the video when the girl define “white privilege”-“People have certain expectations of you, and she feel guilty because people give her privileges she do not deserve.” I found her comment to be profound and sad also. I do not think a person should feel guilty for another person action. Would these experiences be different in your hometown vs. NYC? Yes, growing up in my hometown, Louisiana, as a child, I did not experience these things. In the society I was raised in, people were treated fair, regardless of their skin …show more content…
Growing up in my culture, I did not feel like I was placed at disadvantage compared to others. I feel like the society I grew up in provided equal opportunity for all people regardless of their race. Examples of how my culture influenced my development? I think in my personal life I have experience a great amount of discrimination based on my sex whether than my color. For example, I am the type of person who likes to fix things, say maybe my car. I do not know how many times I have been told, I do not know what am doing because I am woman or get stares of

The video was very insightful with information that pertained to race. Even though the title of the video included the word diversity I was not expecting it to be based solely on race. I did believe that the way they explained race is very important the conversation between the two women weren’t awkward when they spoke about race, which is known to be a delicate topic. I did like that both of the women…

After seeing the video I believe that one of the solutions sort of works, Dualism simply because I went to a catholic school and raised to be religious. I was always taught believe that if someone or myself does something “evil” that we let the devil affect our judgment or listen to the devil to do something wrong such as fight with siblings, steal or cheating. Although, some believe there are issues with this solution because if god has great power, knowledge and all good intentions, then why doesn’t he stop all evil/ devil. I think god uses evil as a scare tactic, represented as a figure to attempt keep individuals from doing something evil and staying on the right and good path that God would want us to follow. Overall keeping individuals…

Culture – Has an affect on whether a person feels like they belong or not, or whether they feel like an outsider. It might rule what a person wears or what their hopes are for the future. For example, in a culture where a woman is expected to marry young and have children rather than a career, this may affect her aspirations or ideal self. She may feel unfulfilled, or happy to have reached her cultural ideal.…

Culture also determines the way we perceive someone and how someone will perceive us, by someone’s way of speaking (language) and ethnic background. Even if their ethnic background is unknown we tend to make an estimation to judge a person. We have to take in mind that this is done intentionally at times. How does culture affect our self-identity? Culture informs perception. Our culture defines our world view, how people view us and how we view ourselves and…

There are many cultural groups and ethnicities in the world. Each and every person has a background and culture in which they come from, derive, or exist into. We don’t have any control over whether or not we have one culture in our families or many, but that’s what makes us diverse or unique and that’s what gives us the culture African American, Jewish, Asian, or Latino. As I have read and researched many diverse cultures during this course, it has taught me a lot about culture and having respect for mine as well as anyone else’s. We define the word culture “as the totality of the human experience for social contexts. This experience is mediated by biological, psychological, historical, and political events. Culture also includes behaviors, attitudes, feelings, and cognitions related to our identities living within the world (Hays, 2010).” As I explore my background, I will then learn more about who I am and the beauty…

In the documentary “I am not Your Negro” directed by Raoul Peck, the most memorable moment for me is the section focuses on integration at American public school. It is difficult for me to believe that many people march on the street only because an African American girl is going to school with the white kids, and I feel really angry and shocked when people are saying things like “when a negro child walk into the school, all decent parents should take their white children out of the broken school”, or “God can forgive adultery, but he is angry about integration ”. Even though those comments and events can have a huge impact on social discrimination and hurt to African American, they are real things that happened in the American history, and…

Race and ethnicity has influenced my life in many ways and up until now I am living with the discriminations that comes with not belonging to a certain group of people. Worldwide racial discrimination race is common and even more common here in the United States. People make choices subconsciously based on the racial group they belong to. Individuals have preference of people of their own ethnicity over people of a different ethnic group.…

Society has shaped me in many different ways. One of the biggest impacts that has definitely stood out during my lifetime is having such a unique culture and slowly assimilating to more of an American lifestyle. Having parents who have immigrated from different countries is starting to become more “normal” than it was in the past due to the United States becoming more and more diverse. My mother immigrated to the United States from Lebanon when she was six years old and my father immigrated from Syria when he was three years old. Both of my parents are Armenian, and living in a mostly white community, like Redondo Beach, gave most of my neighbors somewhat of a culture shock. Being culturally different from my peers resulted my society to exert to ethnocentrism, cultural relativism and social conformity.…
