E: Did you notice… [Harper interjects]
H: Like when it says “Sometimes when we let our fears get us down”, I can say more because it just not facts I can write in my lead.
E: Exactly. Did you also notice that she included the author and name of the text she was writing about- The Marble Champ by Gary Soto
H: [Nods]
E: She did so that if her readers are really drawn to the story and want to read more about the literary text they have all the details to help them

So my thesis is about Fox being smart, maybe I’d look for a quote or a write a funny sentence about being smart.
E: Excellent Harper. What are some resources you can refer to, to give you some ideas for your introductory statement?
H: Hmm! Maybe I can say like…I don’t quite know.
E: Perhaps you can look for some ideas in book some of the books you have read?
H: I haven’t read that many books… I do not have any idea of books that can help.
E: Hmm! Hope maybe you can do some research on the internet and see what you can get. You can even use some fancy vocabulary you see on the word wall. This is something that you can take your time to think about.
H: Yes, I can think about it. Maybe I can say, “Sometimes being smart means being calculated.”
E: Good thinking. Calculated is a wordly wise word that is up on our word wall. Nice job!

E: So we learnt today that when we write a literary essay, we can include a wise or funny statement in our introductory paragraph to hook our readers and draw them into reading the rest of our essay.
