There had been school shootings before Columbine. However, Columbine was the first where cell phones played a substantial role. Cell phones were rising in popularity and many students had one. Many teachers and students called the authorities as well as the local news stations from inside of the school. They were able to give live accounts of what they were seeing, who was injured and where the shooters were (CNN, Kay Jones). The police were also able to gain vital information through discarded phones that were still on call with 911 by listening to conversations and exchanges between the shooters and other victims (LiveLeak, Columbine Massacre). Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold entered the school at 11:09a.m. and had committed suicide by 12:08. Knowing virtually nothing, the press descended on the school by 12:30p.m. Watching the massacre unfold they reported anything they saw or heard. The news stations often interviewed students who had fled from the building, as well as anxious parents waiting for word. News anchors covered anything and everything they could get their hands on. The majority of the information received by the police immediately after the shooting was assumptions, rumors or figments of the imagination and the police refused to release any information to the…

Despite the numerous parents and staff that are in favor of the new transition of teachers with guns there are a few that are not as adaptable with this change as others are. Teachers such as Ms. Moffis that stated, “Traditionally in this area, schools have already been a very safe and welcoming community,” referring to teachers having guns in the classroom, she added, “Nobody’s ever thought about needing that kind of thing at school.” This coming from a town that is well versed in handling guns within their own community and training their children at an early age the proper understanding of firearms.…

The issue regarding arming teachers in schools has been a really hot topic lately with the numerous shootings in schools and on campuses. Many schools are asking themselves if they should go through with training teachers and staff and some schools have started doing so. Even though most schools have not allowed teachers to carry a concealed firearm, some teachers like Kelly Blake, a teacher of agriculture at Fleming School in Colorado, reports that she “wants her students to be protected at all times.” Other teachers along with Blake have looked at the arming teachers situation like this as well because they feel like they have the right to bare arms and protect themselves. Along with giving…

First of all, the old-fashioned values and morals we impose on our children today are depleting. The line between being moral and immoral is becoming very blurry. Teachers are supposed to be important role models to the students as they continue to develop both mentally and emotionally. This occurs throughout the different stages of their lives. However, if the person who is supposed to be the child’s educator and mentor is shown to be in support of guns, then the message that they are sending to the students will be negative. Having guns goes against the morals we teach the children everyday about the negativity of violence “ It’s saying the only answer to violence is more violence. The only answer to guns is more guns” (CBC) By having teachers use more guns, as an answer to more guns, it brings out that violence is the answer to the problem at hand.…

Whether or not armed security guards should be in schools has been a debate for years but has really been brought into the limelight since the most recent tragedies of Columbine, Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook. The supporters of having armed security in our school districts believe that it is a needed layer of security and helps to diminish response time if necessary while keeping children, parents and teachers feeling safer to be in school. The ones against having guns in the schools believe that we have had armed guards in schools and it did nothing to stop it. They also believe that the cost is too high while also worrying about their children’s psyche from being around loaded weapons every day. No matter which side you are on, there are great arguments for both sides that are logical as well as emotional and it is everyone’s job to listen to all of the information that is available and make their decision based on what they feel is the best choice. That choice could be one of the most important decisions that they ever make because it could mean the difference between life and death.…

What if you were a teacher and an armed intruder came into your school? How would you protect your students and yourself? If we allowed teachers to carry a firearm that is stored in a locked container a student would not be able to acquire the weapon, and only in emergency situations would the teacher be allowed to remove it from the container. If there was to be a situation where an intruder entered the school building the teacher would be able to protect themselves and the students. There should; however, be a…

What message does it send if we suggest through armed school personnel that our minds are not enough? “Clearly our students and staffs need to study, work, and play in safe surroundings; chances of having any breach of security need to be diminished. However, classroom teachers are not called to perform such duties.”, Lloyd E. Sheaffer. The students need to know that they are safe and with guns on campus they fear they are not safe. Kids also have a conscious too they know when something's up they will not feel safe with their conscious telling them they have guns around them. Today's teachers build emotional connections with their pupils; they encourage feelings of trust and confidence. Guns and other excessive security measures do not make kids feel safer and they increase their perception that they are unsafe," she said. If they have to go through metal detectors or pass by an armed guard, they believe they are not in a safe…

Although overall school violence is declining in America, mass shootings in suburban and rural areas are becoming more common ("School" par 1). On April 20, 1999 Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold decided to bring firearms and explosives to Columbine High School to go on a shooting rampage. These two boys, before killing themselves, killed 12 students, one teacher, and wounded 24 others. The cause of this Massacre was violence at the school place, Harris and Klebold were bullied as students and no action was taken when they started talking about killing people or physically hurting people. At the beginning of the school year teachers should give students talks about violence and school shootings. Teachers should tell students that violence is not a joke and it needs to be taken as a serious offence, whether there is going to be a fight at…

Despite the evidence found that gun control in fact could decline crime, some individuals refuse to believe so. One of those individuals is, Kit Daniels, a Texas journalist. Daniels in his article “10 reasons why gun control will not work” argues that putting a restriction on gun laws will not stop mass killings or gun related deaths nationwide, because individuals who are set out kill will find a way around these restrictions. Daniels then proceeds to argue that a limit on obtaining guns is a violation to the second amendment (Daniels). The argument that Daniels argues which is that gun control will not abolish mass shootings is accurate to an extend. As Daniels argues individuals who want are set out to kill others will proceed to do so.…

If teachers were armed, it would help bring down the risk of school shootings. During a school shooting, seconds matter. When the police are contacted, it could take up to 15 minutes or more before they arrive. In all that time students and teachers are getting killed. Teachers want to carry guns to be able to prevent this. They feel that they should be armed to protect students. Kasey Hansen, on New York Daily News, said, “I think every teacher should carry a gun. W are the first line of defense. Someone is going to call the cops and they are going to be informed, but how long is it going to take for them to get to the school? And in that time how many students are going to be affected by the gunman roaming the halls?” Because of the many school shootings in the past, teachers feel they should be armed to decrease the risk of this happening and to protect students if it…
