Columbia River Reflection
I was glad to have Holly Green & Christine Kapral as guest speakers in our class on Tuesday. I felt what they had to share was great for reconnecting what we have been discussing in class (such as the causes of poverty, the working poor, or raising children in poverty) using firsthand experience as examples. I enjoyed seeing how much effort they both put into the presentation, I would have given them my attention regardless but it is nice to have the extra materials and visual elements in a presentation. Their presentation certainly made a good impression of Columbia River, and I was personally impressed by the vast amount of services offered by Columbia River and its employees. During the presentation they described multiple situations where a lot of additional care would be made for clients that go beyond basic support, such as when Christine approached the woman living in her car and was able to talk with her through emotional times. Going the extra mile to help those in need really makes a significant difference in whether these people will be able to get back on their feet. Its actions such as that which impact people the most and give them hope, an open ear could be vital if the person struggling was a single mom with little social life outside of work and taking care of young children. Holly and Christine go beyond the call of duty in …show more content…
The contents in this packet were various affordable or free ways for families, couples or singles to enjoy themselves in Clark County. I think this is super important because while Columbia River is mostly focusing on getting people through financial and difficulties and mental anxiety/stress, it is also important to remember to add some time for fun into ones schedule. This helps refocus on the idea that you can have a good time even when things are rough, which is essentially for keeping positivity

Debra Wuichet is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from University of Tennessee. She is the Director of Social Services at North Mississippi State Hospital and has been working there for sixteen years. Her topic of the presentation was mental illnesses and schizophrenia. I really enjoyed her speech because I had little previous knowledge of mental illness. Even though I have taken a few classes that discussed the illnesses, I can understand better with stories or a way to imagine a situation and Debra provided that. Information that I thought I knew, was stuff I had assumed from watching television shows and movies. Most of that information is inaccurate.…

If the emphasis that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has placed on the importance of outcomes is anything to go by, providers of care and support services in today’s care environment may imperil themselves if they do not work to achieve and demonstrate desirable outcomes with and for the people they support in whatever capacity. This much is evident in the way that the CQC in its publication (Guidance about compliance - Essential Standards of Quality and Safety, 2010) highlights what the expected outcomes are to be and then identifies the specific regulations that would lead to meeting the outcome. It is very clear that outcomes are very important. What is perhaps not so clear is determining what outcomes are. Many professionals especially frontline staff who deliver the specific intervention that is supposed to demonstrate the achievement of desired outcomes do not appear to clear as to what this sometimes nebulous term requires of them. Although many careworkers do regularly deliver support that is geared towards achieving outcomes, and although they witness regularly the outcomes of their input into the lives of the people they support, ask the average careworker to demonstrate the outcomes they have helped a person achieve, and they seem to think that they are expected to produce a thesis on the subject, searching for ‘professional’ sounding words and phrases in the attempt.…

They are as followed; implement social changes, educate both yourself and clients on policies, and options, provide professional help to individuals and groups, improve quality of life for clients, and improve social welfare services. Many social workers reach their goals and make positive changes in people’s lives. For example, nine year old girl, Marie Rose Surprenant was brutally abused by her mother and her mother’s boyfriend at the age of eight months. She had been rushed to a local hospital with life threatening injuries disabling her from walking, along with burns on her body and fourteen bone fractures. After questions were raised about the lack of care from her mother and boyfriend, Marie was put into the care of doctors, which from there was adopted by the social worker who had been assigned to her case. Marie wrote a letter of gratitude addressing the doctors, detectives, and the social workers that had been involved in her case. The letter reads “I want to thank you for making me happy by giving me a new warm and safe environment. Now I have a home that is nice and I have three nice meals a day. When I was little I got hurt and wasn’t going to walk at all…” “They (doctors, detectives, social workers) asked how I got hurt in the ER but he (mother’s boyfriend) lied and said that I feel out of the bed. That’s when you got involved and solved…

In chapter one: Power in the People have introduced me to how much power social workers have in the world. Many of us believe that by working and helping people we are giving building ourselves but it is not only about that social workers are also building the client strength that they see on the human being. Also, there is strength perspective that demands s different way of looking at individuals, families and community. This happens when we see the opportunities and capacities of what people the environment need. Saleebey mentioned that clients become clients when someone is in need, have a deficit, problems and diseases. I totally agree with this statement because if there was no one ill or with problem who are social workers supposed…
