Being a first generation college student is something that I take great pride in being. The panelists from yesterday radiated pride and responsibility, in upholding their name as a first generation college student. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them, however, it was hard for me to identify with some of their feelings and attitudes about attending a four-year university. As schools become increasing diverse, cultural competence is essential. Thus, school counselors must have awareness, knowledge, and skills to help the needs of the Asian student population seek higher education. As a minority, I believe that multicultural counseling can greatly impact the lives of students. During my high school years, I felt unaccepted and not understood by my assigned high school counselor because she wasn’t cultural competence. Because my assigned high school counselor couldn’t understand why I chose to apply to only one university, Fresno State, I wasn’t able to go to her when I had questions about college. What she couldn’t understand was that although I wanted to earn an education for myself, I also wanted to stay in Fresno to help financially support my parents. Tatman (2004) states, “Counselors must acknowledge the value that the Hmong place on the family and community and the importance this value plays in all aspects of their lives”.…

Attending the student involvement fair was a great experience. On the surface, the fair’s main purpose was to provide an outlet for students to engage in on campus activities that may strike their interest; however, I found it to be much more powerful than that. This involvement fair was not only a way to showcase Penn State and its nearly 900 clubs, but also a way to draw from each student interests and talents that may have been unknown to them. After attending the fair and meeting a several different organizations, I know that I have become a part of something bigger, and will be able to have experiences and be provided opportunities like no other.…
