College Admissions Essay: Do The Best You Can
Growing up I always heard from my parents and my teachers “do the best you can”. At the time I thought that I was doing the best I could do. I would hear that phrase day after day no matter what I did. I never minded hearing it, it was nice to heat actually. I had always earned A’s throughout elementary and middle school and all of my teachers in the private school I attended seemed to be pleased with the work that I produced. I always worked hard, and in return my teachers rewarded me with praise. I thought that I was an excellent student. This is what I believed until my freshman year of high school. My parents moved to a new school district and decided that I should attend a public high school so I could get the full high school experience. …show more content…
This was the first time a teacher of mine had given me a push to do better than I was doing. Unlike the teachers that I had had before at my private school, she seemed to know that I could do better than I was actually doing. She explained and offered to me suggestions to my writing errors that I had made. In that time, I had discovered that I was a weak writer, I had lacked basic writing skills that were expected out of freshmen high schoolers. I then found out that I was struggling because Mrs. Short wasn’t walking me through every step of my paper, she was doing this to prepare us students for college. That day was a huge turning point in my high school education. I was not longer having someone walk through every step of an assignment while holding my hand. I was no longer satisfied by doing the “best I can” because in that moment, I had learned that my work was not as good enough as I thought. I knew I needed to be better. I was determined to get an ‘A’ from that point forward. Mrs. Short had a huge effect on my writing skills today. Although I am still learning and growing to be a better writer, I think that she would be proud of my

Me being the impatient but helpful person I am I said “yeah sure”. So I moved this little box that any kid in my class could have easily moved outside of her moving it herself. She stopped what she was doing at her cabinet and she showed me my final exam grade and it said 89% B+. A surprised me began smiling excited that I would pass the class with almost a B average for the year. She looked at me and said “T, you are smart. You have given me 40% effort and still somehow you still have managed to pass my class, I struggle dealing with students who are incapable but try hard every single day and you don't show me any effort and still manage to do have a decent grade…” “Why are you afraid? You are easily one of the most gifted students I have encountered and you show no effort?”. I just sat there lost and confused and wondered how she knew and wonder why I had wasted all this time not living up to my full potential, I had let my fear of failure keep me from being the best student I could be. I now look at it and regret the decisions I made in the past. Everyday i have learned to allow myself have higher expectations than I have before. There was a lesson in what my teacher said to me and I will…

My most prized possession is my mental stability and ethical background that I have acquired from my southern upbringing. Growing up in a rural community in the south and being reared by elderly parents allowed my seeds of character and respect to be nurtured by an entire village of people who saw my potential and wanted to see me succeed and thus pushed and prayed for my wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. As a child, series of unique experiences of being able to develop intimate and loving relationships with almost everyone in my community made me appreciate the influence of everyone on my life. It was not long before I realized that no matter how old or young, rich or poor, or educated a person was, everyone contributed to humanity’s niche…

When walking into my first period class as high schooler, I pictured myself as a well-rounded writer. My impression suddenly changed after a few weeks in Ms. Giroux’s class. As I received my first ECQ grade with a blood-inked C written in the corner, I realized I was going to have to put a lot more effort into my writing. I began to spend more time and put tedious details in my writing while doing deep revisions after my paper was complete. Towards the beginning of the year, my writing lacked creativity and organization skills.…
