Claudia Manderson Reference Letter
I am pleased to recommend Claudia Manderson, a previous math student of mine from the past two years, to your honors college. I taught Claudia in Algebra 2 Honors as well as Pre-Calculus Honors, in both of which she earned high-marks every semester. I have found her to be a well-rounded and morally grounded student.
Claudia is an exceptional student in her academic performance as well as in her achievements and involvements outside of the classroom. Even with her heavy course load of all honors and AP courses throughout high school, as well as dual-enrolling, she has maintained a highly competitive GPA and test scores. She is heavily involved in a number of organizations within and apart from the school. Over the past four years she has tutored

Stefanie Grau is a perfect example of a versatile, spirited student. Stefanie takes pride in her grade’s unity and actively takes part in over eight clubs and teams and has been the president of her class since her junior year. Stefanie’s teachers describe her as positive, bubbly, and always having a nice thing to say to everyone. They also thank Stefanie for always willing to lend a helping hand no matter the time or place. To find Stefanie you do not have to look too far, go to any Pine Crest event and she will be there, either cheering our team on or participating (and winning) herself. Stefanie prides herself on her bond with her teachers and would like to thank Dr. Wu, her calculus teacher, for truly creating her love of math and Señora…

I interviewed a friend of mine who tutors at a middle school. She has been tutoring for three years. Her reasons for volunteering are that she enjoys helping kids learn and believes that education is a very important thing. The organization that she volunteers for goes to the middle school every morning and tutors the kids who have difficulty with their classes. An organization like this is needed in our community because everybody in my town does not believe that education is important for the future and tutoring children at a younger, more impressionable age makes an impact. She described her love for watching kids get excited about learning and doing their work. “Every time we all walk into the room, the kid’s race to their tutor, eager to learn more,” she said. As…

We are very fortunate to have an alternative campus in our school district. Shannon High School is for students that have fallen behind in their credits, have dropped out of school and have decided to return to school, or feel like they do not fit in at one of our main traditional campuses. Shannon classes are small, and students have the opportunity to be successful and earn their high school diploma. Tammy Wright is one of the wonderful teachers at Shannon High School. Ms. Wright is a business and marketing teacher at Shannon as well as a school aged parent coordinator on campus. Furthermore, Ms. Wright serves as an advisor to the student organization, DECA. It was a pleasure to sit down with Ms. Wright and ask her a few questions about her…

The Honors Program grabbed my attention because it’s for academically outstanding students and I am that student. Throughout my years of high school, I have taken Advanced Placement and Honors classes and have done very well in them. Being average is not okay for me, I want to do my best and reach my fullest potential in everything I do. I like being challenged mentally and that is exactly what the Honors Program will do for me. In the Honors Program I will be able to engage in social and cultural seminars that I know I will thoroughly enjoy. I have been a part of Diversity Club where different cultures come together to share ideas, exchange food, and get to know more about each others’ culture, so I have an idea of what seminars are like. I am a very outgoing person and I love to meet and interact with new people so through these seminars and projects I will be able to do that. I would also like to get a broader perspective on the world and throughout the many different projects, I will gain that. I read about the Honors Program and what will be done throughout the four years and I thought to myself that this is where I belong, I will fit right in. I want to accomplish many things that this program will allow me to and greatness is what I would like to aim for. The Honors Program at John Carroll University brings together one of the most gifted, diverse, and active groups of people not only on campus, but in the country and I would like to be a part of that, something…

Trophy Syndrome Aunt Felicia was like a helicopter, hovering over and shielding Tia, ready to swoop in and rescue her from any distress. In return Tia became very dependent on her mother and with time grew a very strong sense of entitlement. Growing up with a mother or father who tends to over parent can have a negative effect on the child, causing them to lose self-confidence as well as a decrease in self-motivation. This high sense of entitlement can also be known as Trophy Syndrome. Trophy syndrome may occur when a child is constantly praised and rewarded for minimal work, or even just participation.…

Olsen. My reading level slowly got better and better. By third grade I was still pulled out of the classroom but instead of just being Mrs. Olsen and me, there were also other kids that struggled with reading too. In the beginning of fourth grade, I was tested to see if I would go back into reading recovery again. I passed the test with reading levels above my grade so I graduated from reading recovery. Mrs. Olsen changed my life because now I love to read and before reading used to make me hate having to go to school. I never thought anyone would be able to make that big of an impact on my life but she did. That made me want to become a teacher and make a difference in someone life like she made in mine. A problem today is that there are tons of students that don’t have the extra help or teachers that are willing to do everything in their power to make that difference for the student. I would like to help solve this problem by becoming a teacher and give my students everything I can to help them and hopefully make a different like Mrs. Olsen made. Not being able to read ended up teaching me to never give up, things take time, and the best way to have a problem solved is to find someone that is willing to help make a difference and stick with it. I found a problem in my life and now I am ready to make a difference and solve that…

As a part of this course, I was asked to interview a special education administrator based on the concepts covered in the class. The administrator I chose is Anne Stokowski, my current principal. Anne is someone who I’ve known for the past three years. She has been an integral part in my growth as a school leader. She has provided me several opportunities to lead various committees in the school and encouraged me to pursue my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Ms. Stokowski promotes a school of excellence, encourages collaboration and inclusion, and is knowledgeable about special education as well as providing support for all students.…

Throughout high school, I was involved in multiple extracurricular activities, including, but not limited to, Friends of Rachel and Desert Vista Peer Tutoring (DVPT). During my time as the secretary of Friends of Rachel, I managed all the attendance and arranged all meeting times for the club. I especially enjoyed being the receptionist for Friends of Rachel because through my tasks, I was able to develop my organizational and planning skills. Meanwhile, during the two days per week I spent at DVPT, I tutored hundreds of students in subjects ranging from mathematics, science, history, English, and Spanish. I, also, took on the role of receptionist for DVPT where I facilitated the entire tutoring center by pairing tutors and tutees, marking…

Over the years I have repeatedly proven my dedication to my success and will continue to do so throughout my life. I consider myself to be an individual who has, despite limited resources managed to become one of the top students of her graduating class. Having immigrant parents, I translated for my parents constantly and was the only one capable of filling out important documents due to my parent's inefficiency in the English language. Everyone has had different struggles but we all seem to develop differently within these hardships. With these different stories, one can create a powerful diverse environment bringing beauty and recognition to all those involved. This is my life story……

The child I chose to observe during the course of the semester name is Adrianna, she is in third grade in class 3-221. She is a female and eight years old. She is currently attending the school P.S.225, which is located on 1075 Oceanview Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11235. I chose Adrianna because I felt I could relate to her positive energy. Adrianna seems to be a troublemaker and that is what caught my eye at Adrianna is bursting with energy and I honestly thought she was super cute! I thought she was very smart, always eager to answer any questions the teacher asks. The entire class is filled with cute little third graders who are all smart and capable of doing…
