Class Race And Ethnicity Research Paper
1. What are class, race and ethnicity and what role do they play in social life? Race, ethnicity and class are not only physical attributes of people, but ways of seeing and understanding the world. Many of the current American ideals of these things are a direct result of specific things that have happened in the world and history. One example is immigration that causes population shifts. When this intermixing of two or more different cultures or groups of people happens, dominance and hierarchy will be established. Historically here in the USA the dominant class has been the white/ Caucasian class/ race. These dominant groups tend to control the primary culture of the region, including the primary language, religion, social norms, class

    Three Epiphenomena

The ethnicity of a person is shown by where a person is from and their culture and their language. A person that is called “black” does not show how a person has ethnicity but if a person had parents from a country in Africa and was born in the same country in Africa and learned about the culture and language that makes a person ethnic. When people say a person is generally white or black it does not show their ethnicity. It shows lack of understanding of where a person is actually from and if they know their ethnicity or not. The second epiphenomena of race that Omi and Winant stated is nation. The nation shows how people who are not together in the world actually come together to become a nation. People do this to try and come together with common elements of culture, language or history to inhabit a territory or country. Although these people come together, it does not mean that they agree on these same views. The last epiphenomena of race that Omi and Winant stated is Class. Class is important because from Karl Marx’s idea on class to now, class is still in the world today. In America, there are different classes such as Upper class, upper middle class, middle class, lower middle class and lower class. Depending on what job a person has and sometimes what nationality a person is, it categorizes them into the class system. The system is set up so that the people that…

Barry, Dan. “Bias Suit Filed on Behalf of Disabled Men in South Carolina Meat Plant.” The New York Times, www.nytimes.com/2016/10/01/us/bias-suit-disabled-workers-meat-plant.html?mtrref=www.google.com&_r=0. Accessed 23 Feb. 2017. The perception that non-able bodied people are not hardworking or are a hassle is the reason why less than half of non-able bodied people are unemployed. However, even when non-able bodied people are able to find jobs, they might have to work in horrendous conditions. Two years ago several older men with intellectual abilities were found living in broken down bunkhouses and getting paid less than minimum wage. Now a bias suit is being filed on their behalf. This is reflected in the fact that Employer…

The shameful history of the United States is a burden that is currently affecting everything from education to legal policy. Racial segregation has taken a toll on society and the lives of many minorities. The American judicial system lacks the understanding of human potential by targeting low income minorities and subjugating them for petty misdemeanors. Due to racial discrimination, false allegations towards minorities have resulted in wrongfully incarcerated people for petty crimes; more than likely, they will serve longer sentences for these offenses than a Caucasian person would. Without the necessary resources provided, lack of social capital can inflict damage to their reputation and the overall racial perception society has on minorities.…

For a rich male it probable to lose a lot of ethical behavior. A rich male may believe he is superior to the rest because of his education. Some rich males may have been born rich and have gained no morals because of their lifestyle. Many rich males may easily become addicts because of their free time. The rich male may believe he makes the rules because of the way they were raised. Without a doubt males economic standpoint definitely plays a big role in their attitudes and beliefs. The one thing in the racial tags, as Nuttgens S. (2010) says in his paper “Biracial Identity Theory and Research Juxtaposed with Narrative Accounts of a Biracial Individual” If you have one drop of black blood in you no matter what your skin color is that you are black. "I am an American," says over 308,745,538 people in the United States this year ("2010 Census Data.") These people originate from everywhere; America is a "melting pot" of culture, and that can unfortunately cause social inequalities to arise through the Matrix of Domination, a theory that mirrors the intersectionality of race, class, and gender, as coauthor of Race, Class, & Gender, an Anthology Patricia Hill Collins claims (Andersen, and Collins xi-xiii.) These two terms give label to the commonplace phenomena of race, class, and gender work within a system of social relationships. The understanding of people from other cultures has grown in many ways over the history of the United States. America is starting to realize that the ethnocentric, or judging of others culture through the values of their own, is no longer an acceptable way to approach others. There is still a long way to go to more firmly develop a country with a general appreciation of diversity and inclusive thought. Knowledge is the power that will keep populations in peaceful, cultural awareness and harmonious equality.…

One problem that seems to be increasing over time is the unmarried birth rates in America. Increasing from 18.4% of all births in 1980 to over 40% in 2010(FP-12-06), the current rate is showing that over the last 3 decades teens are becoming more apt to engage in pre-marital sex. The changing in norms and values over the past three decades has lead to a huge increase in unmarried birth rates increasing. It’s not really against cultural norms to engage in the hook-up or have sex with more than one partner in your life like it used to be. Over half of all minority births were to unmarried women, with an alarming 74% of births among black women, 54% to Hispanics(FP-12-06). 74% of blacks while nearly 50% of them were single, also common amongst Hispanics almost 20%(FP-12-06). On the other hand Whites are at a low 30% total of all births being premarital (FP-12-06). Among teens experiencing a nonmarital birth, 45% of the babies were born to single mothers versus 44% to cohabiting mothers(FP-12-06). According to statistics, the increase of age is related to increased rate of cohabiting unmarried births, with a decrease in single mothers. Based on statistics mothers who are less educated are more likely to have premarital birth than those who are highly educated. Minorities leading the way with the most premarital babies, over half being single mothers, this plays a big role in a majority being drop and having to work to support the baby. Causing a developing an endless cycle amongst blacks and other minorities. With the mother having little education, education thus becomes second to the child, and only having one parent present can develop some withdrawal from love. Thus at a young age the child then goes searching for this love and can come at the cost of a premarital baby.…
