After the presidential election when Donald Trump was elected president of the USA, some people were angry, sad, shocked, disappointed, and some worried about the results. A lot of people started to protest and still are. Americans flooded the streets of many cities and began to protest. Many held up signs and chanted loudly, fearing that the results of the election are going to destroy the country we live in. Americans around the nation are fearful of that their civil rights as a citizen are going to be taken away, and that family and/or friends are going to be deported after Trump is sworn into office. Before the game when the National Anthem was being played, Kaepernick took a knee instead of standing up and representing the flag. He says by doing this he is standing up for the oppressed people in the country. Kaepernick claims that before the game he did not tell anyone about what he was planning on doing. He felt as if it was his own right to stand up or not during the Anthem. “If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right,” Kaepernick says after the game. He still continues to take knees during the Anthem at every game. This article relates to the first amendment because when Colin Kaepernick kneels during the Anthem, all he is doing is taking advantage of his right to freedom of speech. Since it is not mandatory to stand during the Anthem, he isn’t breaking any laws. Many feel as if he is a disgrace to this country by not representing the flag, the thing that ties America together, but it is his freedom to do what he wants in this situation.
