Cinderella Persuasive Essay
This poem is a modern twist on the classic Cinderella fable we have been told since childhood. A young girl who loses her mother, and later gains a stepmother and two stepsisters. She then became a maid to her two new stepsisters who were very cruel to her. She would find solace through a kind white dove that made a home in a large tree that overlooked her mother's grave. The dove would bring her anything she wished for. Then came the Royal ball where the prince would choose a wife. Cinderella begged to go, yet her stepmother came up with many reason's why she couldn't. So Cinderella asked her white dove if it could help her get to the ball and of course it did. The ball lasted three days, and the prince danced with her every single day.

    Cinderella’s mother dies from an illness and her father remarries to a woman who has two daughters who treat her poorly. Originally named Ella, she slept near the cinders which lead her to be called Cinderella. One day her father leaves and ask for request from the three daughters. Cinderella wanted a twig. When he comes back he gives her a hazel twig. She plants it next to her mother’s grave. The twig grows into a tree where it produces birds that grant her wishes. When it's time to go the ball, the stepmother tells Cinderella in order to attend the ball she has to pick lentils from a pile of ashes. The birds help her with the task, when Cinderella is finished she goes to her stepmother and she rejects what Cinderella has done. She makes a wish to the tree and the birds give her a dress so she can attend the ball. When Cinderella is at the ball she dances with the prince the whole night. At the end of the night, Cinderella runs away from the prince. The next day she wishes for another dress and does the same thing she did the night before. The third day she wishes for another dress. When the night is coming to an end Cinderella runs away and her shoe gets stuck on one of the stairs because the prince put tar on them so she can not flee.     The life of people during the Great Depression was poverty stricken, jobless, and too many it was hopeless. Life during this time was portrayed very well in the movie “Cinderella Man.” James Braddock is a perfect example of life during this time. He was as poor as the movie displayed him to be and he did have to go receive relief money from the government to heat his house and keep his children. “His Irish-Catholic back round played a major role in the values he held onto, specifically the one of family.” He repaid the relief money as soon as he was able to afford to, in both the movie and real life.     However this is poem is quite different than the other poems that I have read. This poem is not your average “fairytale” because some of the things that happen in this poem would not ordinarily happen in a fairytale. As in lines 68 through 94 it explains the whole scenario about how Cinderella went to the ball and so happened to dance with the prince while her step mother and step sisters were there not noticing that Cinderella was there. Although in the original Cinderella story you would picture Cinderella running away from the prince and leaving her slipper behind, and not being able to get it back because she had to get home before she would get in trouble by her stepmother. The author states in the poem when Cinderella had to leave the ball “The prince walked her home and she disappeared into the pigeon house and although the prince took an axe and broke it open she was gone. Back to her cinders (Sexton 70).” As the poem goes on it also states about when the prince is trying to find the woman that he dance with and left her slipper behind.
