These “unique” techniques vary from the training of talking from the gut, avoiding lip movement, and learning how to switch letters in which the lips are required. The act of not showing the audience that you mouth is moving is a very challenging task, and ventriloquists require hours of training to master this. Axtell Expressions, a company that trains future ventriloquists, offers an online guide to ventriloquist speaking. In this guide, they highlight the many differences that the words and letters have when speaking like a ventriloquist. For instance, all the letters that need the lips for its sound (M, P, F, V, B, W) must be altered with other letters to attain the required sound4.…

So and Wang (1996) examined the acoustic analysis of all Cantonese vowels. In addition, he showed acoustic differences in short and long term vowels. Cantonese vowels include four short vowels and seven long vowels. The four short vowels are [ɪ], [ɐ], [ʊ], and [ɵ] and the seven long vowels are [i], [y], [ɛ], [œ], [a], [ɔ], and [u]. Two participants were instructed to read 1863 words in Cantonese which was completed in three sessions to avoid fatigue. The findings showed that short vowels tend to be more centralized in all positions within the vowel space. Figure 1 demonstrates the first and second formants of the Cantonese vowels. Limitations included small number of…

For this assignment I decided to review voice therapy. Specifically, I chose to look into the accent modification (AM) method. It is a holistic approach to treating voice disorders as it tackles collectively and simultaneously several parameters of the voice (Kotby & Felix, 1998). The AM method has been used to help treat stuttering, to help improve breath control leading to better rhythm and phrasing, correcting articulation, vocal nodules, dysphonia and several other voice disorders. This method relies on three strategies. The first being optimal abdomino-diaphragmatic breath support, the second is rhythmic play of accentuated relaxed vowels with progressive carry over to connected speech, and the third is dynamic rhythmic body and arm movements. These things automatically separate into three phases used in the treatment: 1)…

I found it impossible to make the sounds my teacher indicated went along with a certain letter. Although, I was very much entertained by the faces she made while over-enunciating for my benefit. Also, the concept of a silent letter just wasn't clicking in my head. If a letter was silent, why did they bother putting it in the word in the first place? I found some hope when vowels and consonants were introduced and was excited that I could remember the difference between them. Sadly, my excitement did not last long, for soon after that we learned the "special sounds". You know? That little chart you went over every morning? I became so annoyed by the repetitive "ck" is for duck, "pl" is for plane, "fr" is for frog. To make matters worse, the charts began to get more and more difficult. After much practice, however, I tackled most of these sounds, some even without the thick accent. This was a big accomplishment for me because after this I could begin to do what I had always wanted. I could begin to…
